You may have heard that gravity isn’t a force. This is true. Gravity is not a force; however, this truth leaves us with a number of questions.

For example, we’re commonly told that gravity “pulls” things towards massive objects. I know that, when teaching introductory physics (especially in elementary classes), some teachers and textbooks say things like, “Earth’s gravity pulls objects towards the center of the planet.”

But how can this be? Surely, gravity must be a force in order to pull things, right?

Anyone with a decent physics teacher would have been told that your calculations are done with the force due to gravity . Gravity being the phenomenon that objects accelerate towards each other.

Did you read the whole article ? Remember that for long scientists tried to pinpoint what gravity is, the effects of gravity can be modeled but exactly what constitutes gravity was unknown. Gravitons were proposed but never found as I understand. Perhaps better to claim that gravity can be modeled as a force and that early scientists such as Newton claimed it to be a force giving rise to a longstanding tradition.

Gravity doesnt move objects. They are already in motion following a path. That path is the curvature of space-time. I cant say for sure where their motion came from. Perhaps someone can.

This tells me that gravity isnt a force. The notion thats its a force is something we inherited from previous theories which have now mostly been debunked. Once you stop thinking of gravity as force, then the question becomes irrelevant.

Unlike f=ma objects don't experience force due to gravity but only the acceleration relative to other reference frames. Under the influemce of gravity (freefall) your physics still seems the same hence it seems inertial. Only when fighting against it (standing on the ground) you feel the acceleration of 9.8m/s/s. So on the ground it feels like your accelerating away with the force F = W.
