Greek Yoghurt

Traditional Greek yoghurt is made from sheep milk.

The Greeks want other countries to call it Greek style but not all markets agreed to it.

Not at all, unlike Champagne vs MCC which uses the same process just in different locations these are entirely different things.

Same with Feta, where we only have Feta-style because it’s not made with goat or sheep’s milk.

“Style” is a presentation not a process.

Sparkling Wine would be “champagne style” effectively, the process is MCC which can be called Champagne when it comes from there.

Same with brandy and cognac.

Greek yogurt and Greek-style are two completely different manufacturing processes. It's not a PDO like Champagne, Rooibos Tea, or even Feta... if someone used the correct process they could sell it here as Greek Yogurt.
Then Woolworths, The Gourmet Greek etc lied to everyone. Both say according to SA labeling laws Greek Yoghurt can only be called Greek Yoghurt if it was made in Greece. Otherwise it's labelled as Greek-style or just Strained yoghurt.

Woolworths told me that personally when I asked about Greek yoghurt a couple of years ago.

You aren’t entirely wrong, the same applies to halloumi.

My point was rather that “Greek style” more often than not isn’t even the same process done in a different location but an entirely different thing.

So unlike M.C.C and Champagne which is an identical process done in different locations “Greek style” may as well be equivalent to sparkling wine as the process isn’t guaranteed to be the same and it’s almost never goat/sheep milk based.

Like Bwana says it’s not officially a PDO, but the locals are probably just playing it safe as it might very well happen at some point.
