I want to use a recipe for vegetable soup (I can only assume it is an American recipe) and it asks for a "tin of green beans" ... :wtf::confused:

Am I understanding correctly - is this the same green beans we buy fresh here or is it something else and I am just misunderstanding?

Don't you get tinned green beans in SA?

But yes, they are your standard green bean you get fresh or frozen locally.

been buying tinned green beans for years ..... prefer it over fresh actually. It makes for lovely green beans & mash.

I must have walked past them for my entire life, cos I have never seen it.

Baked beans / sugar beans / broadbeans / red kidney beans in all varieties, but green beans: never.

The problem is that tinned food contains those nasty preservatives. Or not?

Just dropped in at the local spar and they're on the shelf.

Iirc people use them in salads as they're pre cooked.

You won't find them with the beans.. you'll find them stacked with the peas etc.
Koo's brand is the best, but they're frikkin' expensive. IIRC you're looking at around R15 a can.

Oh, and you're looking for string beans, not the individual beans in a can style.

Go here (Damn I hate flash sites):

http://www.tigerbrands.co.za/Default.htm

Click Our Brands on the top right of the logo. When the page loads, scroll the brand logos until you see Koo, then click that.
Scroll down until you see 'Canned Vegetables', and then scroll the pictures of the cans to the far right.

It turned out that I actually decided to cook the soup without beans, but I will have a look next time I am in the supermarket.
