Cape Town - The Cape Town City council has endorsed Green Point stadium as the only feasible city venue to host a semi-final match for the 2010 Soccer World Cup.

This emerged from an analysis of six possible venues, the council's executive director of transport Mike Marsden said on Thursday.

He said Green Point posed the lowest risk with regard to affordability, long-term sustainability and time constraints.

Close contender Culemborg was a lost opportunity as there was insufficient time to resolve issues around land acquisition.

Newlands did not meet the 68 000-seat requirement for hosting a semi-final.

Winfield, Blue Downs and Athlone should not be considered as host venues at all, a consortium of consultants has found.

Some good news. I think..

:)

Funny how if it is a DA council building the stadium it is fine to be negative...

But hang on?

This is the first stage.
What about public comment and objections?
Court cases, Interdicts.

The residents of Green Point and surrounds were up in arms about the Green Points Stadium Upgrade? Have their attitudes changed?

About time too! Good news indeed. Now lets get building the damn thing already! :)
Once the go ahead is given for building, 3 guesses which City will be ready first for the 2010 World Cup.

So, is this where the fuel levy, taxpayers, road accidents fund and car license fees of Western Cape people are going? to fund the money to build the stadium???

Guess we can expect more rate hikes and funny levies being introduced from then on...

Ever heard of forced expropriations - like they are doing to the farmers?

@kaspaas: won't happen. If one person refuses to sell then it don't matter... As far as I understand no houses will however be demolished? Aren't they building it on the Metropolitan golf course?

Anyway, back to my point. The whole reason those bridges are unfinished in Cape Town is purely because of the dude who refused to sell :D And now they've become a landmark (embarrassing though it may be)

With regard to "those bridges", i was under the impression that they did not match up correctly, and that was the reason they couldnt be finished, and a stadium already exists , so to enlarge the existing site shouldnt be a major headache, the hotels and infrastructure exist in and around the area to better cater for the masses, and it is easier to control the area from a security point of view, and easier to lock down in the event of any major crisis.
As an after thought , in Victorian times, Green point common was a lake where people could paddle around in small boats, and it was used as a camp for prisoners of war during the boer war.

I thought they simply ran out of money before they finished the bridges. They are a lankmark, but they would certainly ease traffic if they were finished...Surely they could take all the money from the films they shoot there like every week and build with that....?

PS: Interesting afterthought...:)

.

Better roads, public transport more hotels... I think they are just going to have to deal with it, as people around the world who live near stadia have to do. Or they could always move :)

hj2k_x : But what has happened to the spring/river/whatever?

Cape Town badly needs some small lakes. We should allow albion spring to become a lake
