Grey import warning for sellers

South African individuals and small businesses looking to capitalise on the explosion in e-commerce by reselling so-called "grey goods" should be aware that buyers must be given mandatory notices about warranties on such products.

South Africans have increasingly embraced online shopping in the past few years, including on international stores like Amazon, Temu, Shein, Wish, and Alibaba.

Not had much joy here, [ South Africa ] when try to get satisfactory honoring of warranty so, am generally happy to import Grey goods, with no expectation of any warranty.

When it comes to warranty - local companies have more excuses and outs, than insurance companies dodging a claim.

Grey goods and parallel imports are technically two different things. Grey goods use unauthorised channels and most often dodges customs. Grey goods are also in some cases counterfeit goods.

when its a free for all like they have here, with so many dodgy people just importing whatever they like,
this is bound to happen, with a corrupt and inefficient criminal system we have here, it truly is a gangsters paradise.

South Africa where the government is a criminal syndicate and the people have to follow laws. This dust-bowl remains a world class joke. As for grey imports as long as you are told it is a grey import you would be the nana for complaining after you knowingly bought it.

To try and get these local warranties often are a struggle and nightmare anyway so might as well import. Sometimes you get stuff repaired and it comes back in worse shape or they do such a **** job it is not even fixed

Parallel imports and grey imports are synonyms. They’re the same thing. Neither are counterfeit.
It's only in recent years that the terms have become muddied and if you look at such explanations they often contradict themselves or try to explain things away in ad-hoc ways that don't make sense. There always was and still is a distinct legal definition.

Parallel imports = goods not imported through the manufacturer or distributor's official channels.
Grey imports = goods not imported through authorised (excluding by the manufacturer) channels. This is usually goods that dodge tax in some way or are not allowed to be imported by the person or counterfeit goods. The goods themselves are however not illegal to own.
Black imports = goods which are fully illegal to import except by specific persons with permission. These goods are also illegal to own or have in your possession.

I wonder why, except to apparently lend credibility, people would be referred to as expert this and expert that. It seems silly. If someone's an expert, it would be clear. I don't think it's an appropriate title for most.

There are no experts as there's no qualification. Should rather refer to qualifications.

More often than not qualifications mean diddly squat, people with degrees in physiotherapy are making pronouncements on finance, etc. etc. etc. deployment these days here, does not take your qualifications into account, nor your lack of qualifications, so they are pointless.

That's why they should have the qualifications. Someone who's a doctor isn't qualified to speak on nuclear physics. Why they don't mention qualifications but pass them off as "experts".
