Gripens over Cape Town

I heard something fly over my car at about 10:20am at canal walk. Couldn’t see anything, but it wasn’t a Boeing engine. Or the Mavericks guy.

I heard lots of noise yesterday, but was too slow to get outside and see what was actually flying. Definitely not just Hawk trainers...
I also keep missing them. Apparently there were a few flyovers on thursday. What seems to be regular is that they do a flyover at 5pm almost on the dot.

So tonight i'm going to try and get ready to see that one as it comes over.

The Air Force won't transmit ADB-S data on flight radar. Security reasons obviously.

They sometimes do (often don't), particularly transport aircraft (not VIP) flying in congested airspace near civilian airports. It was a big factor in the Washington DC helicopter/plane crash (no ADSB). Maybe not so much in SA though...

I've seen it being used in CT with the Gripens. A quick Google screenshot.

I finally got a fairly nice view today, as a pair of delta-winged with canards flew in formation relatively low (1000ft/300m) over Claremont heading south! Google says those are probably Gripens. Lots of low clouds today, so those had to fly close to the surface...

P.S. Nothing shows up on ADSB on FlightAware.com.

I heard the jets a while ago but had the cat sleeping on my lap so couldn’t move.

I don’t think the Rafael is here so that was the Gripen. Rafael has two engines so easy to spot the difference.

Edit…
It’s grpen

One flew over my house on Friday late afternoon ! Awesome sight seeing that delta wing hurtling along at relatively low altitude.

Made me feel like a kid again.

Edit; not yesterday, Friday

so a "friend" of mine is one of the pilots
there was a gripen c (single seat) single role combat jet & a gripen d (2 seat) multi-role jet (combat / training / surveillance).
gripen c is a little lighter and more agile

the gripens are based at afb makhado (ex afb louis trichardt).
friend is with 85 combat flying school, based at makhado

they are manufactured by saab and run on an engine manufactured by volvo.
saab is contracted to maintain these aircraft for the air force
price tag is about R800m each, they cost about R75 000 p/hour in the air
