Grocery Specials Thread

By the way, WTF is going on with the price of potatoes lately? I paid R80 for a 7kg pocket at Spar yesterday. Normally it's never more than R50

Ya potato prices pretty wild at the moment.
Asked the takeaway guy how do they adjust with such pricing.
They absorb. Hectic.
And then oil is up as well.

I found this:

CEO of Potatoes SA, Dr André Jooste, has stated that there has been an average increase of 46% in potato prices, if you compare the price from June to the second week of October 2019 with the same period this year.

Limpopo province’s colder than usual winter and the Covid-19 pandemic, more specifically lockdown, has had an impact on potato prices according to CEO of Potatoes SA, Dr André Jooste. Jooste, however, told Review that there is no need to panic as there is usually a slight increase in potato prices from August each year.

Where you getting them for R9?
I prefer them to doritos esp for nachos

I bought 2 dorito's the weekend at spar (any flavor for R30). Its a bargain too. Look at the weekly specials. If I see them again, I will post a comment on here

What is up with lettuce pricing? Our pick have gone in week from having them on special at R3.99 per head, all the way to R19.99 per head, for the same lettuce :(

And, this isn't technically grocery, but MrD pricing has gone bonkers as well. Was at Romans the other, after using MrD almost exclusively for Romans for a while, and they were on average R18 more expensive. And then still charge delivery? Wtf?

This. One month you're paying R21 for a 2l milk. Next month it's R21,50. Month after that it's R22. And it just keeps going up. We're long past buying our favourites, and literally shop for the cheapest **** these days.
And cucumber. R20 a pop. HO LEE SHEET.

Spar has them for R15 on special ad I was laughing saying wtf kind of special is this?

I used to buy the packets of milk because a R1 saving is a saving but damn I was shocked to find 1l of Douglasdale sachet at R15.20 each o_O

I buy specials milk now, and nothing else. If it's on special (usually under R24 a bottle, no matter what the brand) I usually buy around 10 or 12 bottles and freeze them in at home. Lasts a few weeks at least.

There's always been a significant premium in my experience.

Spar had a decent special here this wekend. 2l extended shelf life cartons for R21 with spar rewards. I bough 4. It's extended shelf life and it can last 30days after production date so I looked for the newest dates and have them in the fridge stocked

It's store dependent. I've seen some places charge exactly the same price on MrD as they do in-store. Others are hellishly more expensive. I ordered stuff a while ago and visited the restaurant for the first time in a long time this weekend. Was shocked to see I paid something like 40% more on the app. Never again. Call and collect, thank you. It's not worth a R100 extra charge.

That's not bad. I don't have Spar rewards though, mostly because the Spars here in our area are...spotty at best. I remember buying topside lean mince a while back and getting pieces of arteries in the mince. And not small pieces either. Looked like strings of spaghetti. It was pretty wicked. I don't mind, I ate it, but wife refuses now to eat Spar meat. Specially their "pypie-mince".

Yeah, I'm mostly done with MrD as well, haven't seen a single store where they don't scalp the hell out of you - so maybe the stores in our area are just greedy then?

Yeah, we've found the same stuff in our mince, so we've gone to having certain shops that we buy mince from. Luckily, there is a shopping centre close to us that re-opened recently, they now have a Food lovers/Woolies/P&P and Checkers - but the nicer newer checkers - all in one place. Makes it so much easier to shop.
