Grocery Specials Thread

The "nicer newer checkers" really is really nice. Their fruit is pretty great.

By the way, WTF is going on with the price of potatoes lately? I paid R80 for a 7kg pocket at Spar yesterday. Normally it's never more than R50
Had an unusually cold winter, this affected the harvest apparently

That's not bad. I don't have Spar rewards though, mostly because the Spars here in our area are...spotty at best. I remember buying topside lean mince a while back and getting pieces of arteries in the mince. And not small pieces either. Looked like strings of spaghetti. It was pretty wicked. I don't mind, I ate it, but wife refuses now to eat Spar meat. Specially their "pypie-mince".

I'm sorry I had to come here and find this post because I'm confident you jinxed it for me. When you initially posted this I was like whatever look at this guy I bought mince for so long and it never happened to me ever.

Now I'm on quite a strict diet and I basically only eat mince as a protein so I make omlets ect with it.

I bought the very same mince. Lean Top side mince. Cooked my meal and it was so good until I started chewing on something that felt like a pipe of some sorts. A bit shorter than the size of a single elbow macaroni. Ewwwwwwwwwwww.

First time this happened to me and it will NEVER happen again. I don't buy meat from this Spar anymore which is a pity because they are just around the corner and open early and close very late. PnP has the best mince for me especially the bulk packs on special.

... Not around here. Check the label. Pick N Pay "mince" is sometimes as much as 30% NOT beef! Scary.

Checkers meat is always good around me... Anything else is always dodgy...

I bought a small tray of mince from checkers and it was suspiciously red. Very red so I did not know what to think about that but in general they are pretty good.

The 2 x PnP close to me is clean meat is always nicely packed and fridges are chilled. I have not experienced bad products from them yet.

I do like to get mince from Fleisherei if I'm going that way also decent quality.

Suspiciously red. That might be all the BEEF! Im not kidding, pick n pay beef mince is like 10% ostrich and 20% soy!

Lekker man! Pypiemince for you as well :P

I buy my mince now from the butcher. I know what he puts in it, because I've seen him make it. He usually runs a special at R267 for 3kg of lean mince, packaged like you want it. In my case, usually 500g packs. That's simple and sorted for us now.

Not sure when last you guys checked the price of watermelon

Yeah well, this scarred me for life. I went to PnP the other day and looked at sausage and went "hmm, this looks awfully cheap, let me grab a tray.".

I got home and saw it was like half ostrich and, you have to remember, I don't eat any dangerous animal. So I fried it up anyway and gave it to my dog.

My dog has not been the same since. Sometimes I'm now getting scared that his traction control might fail when he corners around the house.

"I don't eat any dangerous animal"

Do you eat beef? Because a beef is pretty damn dangerous.

Arg this Spar is only good for one thing. Veggies. Super cheap veggies.

3x medium cucumbers for R15
2 x medium sized Green Peppers for R10
1 x Large cabbage head for R10

So these deals are good but I avoid the meat aisle at all cost now.

Those cucumbers are cheap. The local pnp (not too far from you) sells their cucumber for R19.95! Spotted the same day I saw the watermelon.

Yep it's quite nice. We've had a few of them get upgraded around Pretoria.

First really nice new one I saw was at Blu Bird shopping centre close to Melrose Arch. Thought they were going after Woolies with their new store. Looks great!

Why is Clover moo fresh milk so moo expensive? I have never seen it lower than R32 for a 2l bottle. Do people buy it at this ridiculous price?
