Grooves on Brake Discs

Hi

What causes grooves on Brake disc's?

I had my discs skimmed and new pads fitted , now 500km later I have grooves on the discs.
 
Do they catch your nail when you try scratching the discs..?

Discs do wear in such a way that it may look like there are grooves..

Bad quality pads may also wear unevenly and that will cause grooves that will catch your nails..

The material of the pad and dirt particles that get caught between the pad and disc. Don't stress about it, it does not affect your braking ability.
 
Thanks everyone. It's the first time I am using Safeline and I find they have dont have the brake power of the Oem pads.

What over pad makes are good? Not ones that eat the disc please
 
Do you drive your car hard? I found that if you've overheated the pads a few times they tend to eat the disks. I just replace pads and disks at the same time, never been a fan of skimming.

Safeline are only good for taxis imo. I used them once, and never again because of the quick and uneven wear. Damaged my discs as well so I had to replace those...

You're better off fitting even entry-level Ferodos like the Green range.

Funny thing is PowerBreak recommended them to me. Never again will I fit them.

What are Aftermarket Bosch pads like?

Braking causes grooves.

It's a wear item. It's the same as the soles of your shoes wearing hard. Drive them hard, they will wear hard.
 
Don't be a cheapstake, buy new disks.

Brakes are a critical safety component of your car after all

What car and model is it?
I some bosch pads for the wife's car about a year ago. They seem to be OK. The pamphlet on the inside referenced sure brake or safeline. I can't really remember exactly which it was, so it was probably made under licence.

Not sure about the Rebranded-Bosch pads. It's probably cheapies sold with a markup. I have used ATE (Average pads), OEM pads and Ferodo. The Ferodo set is still in my vehicle since 2 years ago and not much signs of wear yet. I did however change the discs and pads both to Ferodos after that Quickline fiasco.
 
Thread hi-jack.

I'm getting slight shuddering at low speeds recently. I think my pads should be due for a replacement. Maybe even my discs/rotors.
I had a look at my 1 disc just now and there are some deep scour marks which don't look too good.
I will take another look this afternoon and post pics

Some info:
Golf 5 GTi
original pads replaced at 70k km.
currently on 2nd set, now on 183k km.
original discs.
had a service in Feb, no mention of needing replacements. (they say they do check, but maybe they didn't)

My thoughts:
My gut feeling is that rotors and discs need replacing, purely based on the current mileage. and I suppose the recent shuddering...
I used to believe skimming was an 'unsafe' way to get a few more KM out of the rotors. Now it seems its kinda normal for skimming to be done?
Any recommendations on a decent place for a brake disc and pad check? I don't want to be taken for a P
I don't mind paying for quality, please recommend a brand of disc and pad, should I end up replacing.

I know,,, post is useless without pics... but its raining shh
