Grooves on Brake Discs

Some info:
Golf 5 GTi
original pads replaced at 70k km.
currently on 2nd set, now on 183k km.
original discs.
had a service in Feb, no mention of needing replacements. (they say they do check, but maybe they didn't)

My thoughts:
My gut feeling is that rotors and discs need replacing, purely based on the current mileage. and I suppose the recent shuddering...
I used to believe skimming was an 'unsafe' way to get a few more KM out of the rotors. Now it seems its kinda normal for skimming to be done?
Any recommendations on a decent place for a brake disc and pad check? I don't want to be taken for a P
I don't mind paying for quality, please recommend a brand of disc and pad, should I end up replacing.

no ways a set of front pads last 70k let alone a further set lasting over 100k. the backs maybe i can get behind but never the fronts.

very likely they did change it before 70k. Are you not on a maintainance plan maybe and the pads were replaced after 70k and you just didn't remember because you didnt pay. if it is the case those pads are insane and must be pretty far gone by now.

Nope I take it for a service every year (not at VW), and every year I wait for them to tell me my pads are done. Here I am still waiting lol.
I dont think VW did them before 70k. I remember hounding them to check and replace before warranty was over, but they said they were fine. shortly out of warranty they needed replacing.

Anyway I will find a place to do a full check.

Cost of skimming vs A set of new discs is not that big a difference
Go to goldwagen and get some new discs and pads - get someone to fit if you cant diy
 
Condition of discs.

The one front disc is far worse than the rest.

Necro... I took my car for a check up a while back, they found evrything to still be fine....

I've been seeing a facebook ad from Trackrecon, selling EBC pads and discs. Emailed for a quote.
greenstuff pads and a non-EBC brand disc. R11200 for all discs and pads. (excl fitment) This seems expensive.
HAve not got a prices from Goldwagen yet. (not in the mood to hang on whilst they are still busy talking on another line)

What ballpark figure should I be looking at for pads and discs all round?

Completely depends on the car.

My old car, the EBC yellow pads were like 3k just for fronts. Disks were 1k ea.
 
Oh I see its a MK5 GTI.

11k seems a bit excessive, then, yeah.
