Group arrested for Woolies protest

Seems like the police is too busy arresting demonstrators at malls than to be bothered about mall robberies around the country

Woolies certainly have no shortage of "Cheques no longer accepted" signs, they can, I am sure, churn these new ones out pretty quickly.

That kind of trivializes real terrorism. Terrorism lite would be calling in a fake bomb threat.

That's what you describing. "You ignoring our placard protest outside the shop, so now we have to go inside and lie down in the way of your trolley so that you can notice us".

F that.

The post office can close for what most of us care and all those strikers loose and incompetent management loose their jobs and a new organisation launched... and the only reason I care for that even is so that I can get just one letter a month in my residential post box so I have proof of residence.

Understandably there will be protests we all won't always agree with. That's part of living in a diverse society. We're vibrant and have to just get to live with each other peacefully. Promoting the good aspects of the protest while criticizing the bad but with civility and respect can only be a good way to approach this rather than dehumanising people from the get go.

Appreciate the above.

Everyone has the right to dignity even if the protesters don't believe the same for everyone else. Not the shoppers right to enter Woolies unimpeded, nor the right to for Woolies to source goods from whichever country they want.
Nor people from other faiths or no faith.

#BOYCOTTWOOLWORTHS ACTIVISTS, RELEASED WITHOUT CHARGE, AFTER BEING ARRESTED ON INSTRUCTION BY WOOLWORTHS FOR PEACEFULLY PROTESTING

Over 60 #BoycottWoolworths activists, including children, have been released without charge after being arrested yesterday after peacefully protesting in Woolworths in Killarney Mall in Johannesburg. Woolworths has confirmed that it called the police and claims the activists were intimidating shoppers. However the retailer has failed to produce evidence of any intimidation or violence.

The Palestine solidarity and human rights organisation, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) South Africa welcomes the police releasing all the activists without charge. Woolworths is fast gaining a reputation among the public, in the media and on social media, of protest, boycotts and using force to suppress freedom of expression.

Bizarrely, police had arrested the activists after the activists had carried out the successful #BoycottWoolworths “die-in” flashmob and after they had peacefully left the Killarney Mall branch of Woolworths and in fact had even walked out of the doors of the mall and were in their transport vehicles. Woolworths it would seem wanted to punish the activists.

A large solidarity vigil was held outside the Hillbrow Police station yesterday with members of the public demanding the #BDS60 activists be released without charge. Deputy Minister of Basic Education Enver Surty also attended the impromptu mini-rally to support the activists.

Amongst those detained included Obakeng Chikane, the son of anti-apartheid activist and stalwart, Reverend Frank Chikane. Obakeng Chikane is also a leader of the ANC Youth League in the Johannesburg region. Several children were also amongst those arrested.

In Benoni on the East Rand, Woolworths management called SAPS, CMS security and Lakeside Mall security to remove peaceful protesters this morning from the store at Lakeside Mall.

13 activists were also detained at Woolworths Blue Route Mall in Cape Town, yesterday Woolworth's management demanded that the activists give up their footage before the police arrested them. This intimidation by Woolworths is shameful. For Cape Town information call: 082 xxx xxxx

Woolworths continues to act in an arrogant and high handed way. The retailer refuses to negotiate with concerned consumers, political parties, trade unions and human rights organisations. Instead of ending trade relations with Israel, it resorts to using force to clamp down on non-violent protests. Woolworths can easily find alternative local suppliers for the products it is currently sourcing from Apartheid Israel

The increased use of force by Woolworths towards peaceful activists will not intimidate us, BDS South Africa along with concerned consumers and member of the public will intensify our actions in the coming weeks demanding Woolworths end ties with Israel. We are committed to the cause of universal freedom and justice. Violence and intimidation will not stop our campaign as it continues to grow and gain support.

always love the "apartheid israel" reference by people who claim to be so concerned

strangely, there is never mention of apartheid mecca from the same group - apartheid mecca for odd reason is always issued with a free pass.

BDS may claim that their protests are peaceful but from videos like the one below I can understand why customers may feel intimidated and even unsafe in the presence of one of these BDS protests (I certainly would).

BDS need to realise that Woolworths stores are private property and it is not their constitutionally protected right to protest inside Woolworths stores.

You don't intimidate anyone either. Just talk. What have you ever done other than playing tough guy on mybb?

Wahahahah :D I knew eventually you would come out. I thought this doesnt interest you?

what do you mean by apartheid mecca?

That the government of Saudi Arabia is guilty of the crime of apartheid? On this point I and probably most of the members of this forum who aren't canisters would agree.

That somehow atrocity justifies the State of Israel defying both its own and international law?

Next time ;)
These racist anti Semites dont intimidate me one bit.
Next stop Cape Town, need to educate all the Mohameds
Mr Desai is a racist - plain and simple.

Whats the definition of a semite?
