Growing Chilli

I germinate mine in a ziplock back and some tissue paper then put them in the drawer and check on them again two weeks later.

When I say wet tissue paper I mean moist NOT dripping.

Getting the plants to grow up from seed is the hard part and I've had mine semi-indoors all winter to go into the garden in the next couple of days.

Once they are plants proper they are pretty easy and lowish maintenance.

no need to really bother with germination, a couple of weeks ago I put some jalapeno seeds in some pots outside and occasionaly I remember to water them, started peeking out the pots a few days ago, here is one such pot:

Although I have a spare pot where I tend to do that with excess seeds like when I buy Jalapeno's from woolies or green peppers or whatever the success rate isn't nearly as high.

Another great tip is using all those spare chop sticks you get with your Sushi to keep your plants up right.

Sorry I see it's super thread necro.

I also have a few seeds in a container with damp tissue paper and the orange sweet pepper seeds have germinated in only 3 days. But I did wet the tissue paper with Margaret Roberts organic super charger.

All I have growing now is one sad lonely jalapeño that I planted last year then overwintered.

It is just an experiment though.

Current growing medium is 50/50 perlite and coco peat mix (almost zero nutrients).

I have forgotten to water it many times through winter but it still lives, barely.

Planning on sticking it into a much bigger pot with some real nutrients soon, letting it turn into a huge monster than taking cuttings and multiplying it from there, if I don't forget.

More to see how many cuttings I can get from it and how fast.

This is the first year I am trying to grow chillies and I'm struggling to get my seeds to germinate. I did the ziplock bag with wet kitchen towel thing, but so far (two weeks in) nothing looks promising. Could it be that I made the paper towel too wet?

They can take up to 32 days to germinate. Sometimes even longer, depends on genetics, seed quality, temperatures etcetc.

And then some of the hotter seeds are even harder to grow.

That said, I have some Nagas waiting for me at home, complementary of Ook-brother :D

Put the seeds between paper towels, moist not wet. Seeds need at least 20.c to germinate, so put it in a warm place. I have a few super hots growing and i have plants from last season.

Yellow Scorpion
Carolina Reaper

Standard green finger chillies from woolies.
Three year old haberno bush, looks pretty sad now.

If your paper towel smells mank, change it. If you've got mold its a lost cause and start again.

the habanero seeds I harvested last year somehow got wet and rotted in the container I kept it in  Had a mixed bag of Paprika, Peppadew and Green Pepper seeds that I planted 2 weeks ago, still waiting for them to germinate

P.S Would love to get my hands on some of those Carolina Reapers ... will you be willing so sell me a pod or two?

I have some dried pods i can give you, you should get a bout 4 seeds per pod. Are you ever in JHB? If you're near fourways this weekend i can meet you somewhere. I'd say post it, but with all the backlog going on, i dont anticipate you will get it soon.

I can pre-germinate them for you as well if you want.

****, I have mold. How to avoid mold?

You can make a dilute solution of hydrogen peroxide, 10 volume is usually good. That usually kills mold on contact. But mold is a sign of to much moisture. If you smell it start getting mank, switch it to a new paper towel, or instead of spraying the towel with water use the dilute hydrogen peroxide as the soak.

You could also use jiffy pellets, but these need to be placed into a heated propagator, if your temps are not high enough the seeds will not germinate.

Hi, thanx a million ... as luck would have it though I'm having my car serviced this weekend. Would next weekend suit you?

P.S pre-germinated would be awesome
