So I finally decided to order ADSL. I check the Telkom website and what do you know my exchange is ADSL compliant. So I go with the order. So 3 weeks go by and a phone Telkom back. The request is back from the planning department and it's denied. I can't get ADSL because the lines from the exchange are fiber optic and there is no project to chage them to copper.

So now I sit thinking "Why on earth would they enable the exchange for ADSL if nobody can use it?"

Now the question comes in. Does anybody else prehaps have the same problem? Do you by any chance use a 011 795 exchange? Hopefully if there are enough of us they might change the lines.

Thanks

Its not the lines that need changing. Its a missing piece of hardware (mini dslam) between you and the exchange (probably the box on the corner, where they park every weekend in order to claim overtime) , but don't quote me on this, I'm a total noob :D

As per Telkom
ADSL is a modem technology that operates over a normal copper line connecting customers to the PSTN (Public Switched Telephone Network). This means that ADSL sits on top of it and does not interfere with normal voice operation. However the technology has a distance limitation, typical between 3 and 5 kilometres. Some of the new developments that Telkom recently introduced include the mini DSLAM which can be installed in street cabinets and serve a group of customers. Previously these customers would not have been able to be offered an ADSL service because they are too far from the exchange or are connected part of the way by optic fibre.

if I remember correctly, telkom are trying to upgrade most of the lines to the exchanges to fibre and only have the very last part to your house as copper ... thus allowing for higher speeds. So you are actually ahead of the country in this regard :) ... but unfortunately ... as always ... with telkom ... no one talks to each other .... so dumbass actually tells u to go back to copper :) ... unfortunately .... don't know of anyone that can actually help u .. sorry

John_Dough, I have exactly the same problem. The exchange is enabled for ADSL, but the retards ran fibre to my house.

011 886 exchange.

Well I believe this sucks even more now. They told me yesterday that there wasn't a project out on it(I live in probably one of the oldest areas in Randparkridge) So if a project hasn't been set yet then will it ever? This is a simple solution and yet they have to make it a massive problem.

Now I pay the same rental charges as everybody else, whether using copper or optics with the installed DSLAM but my infastructure is obviously inferior. Ag, I just can beleive this.

I wonder what would happen if I ordered a new line with ADSL capabilities not just an upgrade? Any thoughts?

Regards

P.S thewanted_ I feel your pain and your frustration too!!

I asked them this exact same question. Apparently it makes no diff cos the physical cable to YOUR house or the box on the street is still fibre :(

I hate them. So very much.

Please say its not so...I've just applied on 011 794

John, may I ask where abouts in Randpark ridge you are?

I'm very close to Rock Cottage

I had the same problem ordered ADSL for my home in 2004, got told the same story "fibre". Took 18 months before they installed the ADSL. Techie that did the install had no clue of any fibre in our area?

I'm just behind Rock Cottage. Near the water tower.

Well hopefully between the two of us, we can pressurise them into getting ADSL in our area

Nope...

Anyway, my application is in, Exchange is apparently ADSL enabled, and I can phone them in 10 days for a progress report.

I just agreed with everything she said...My last installation was smooth and took 21 days, but I surely can't have good luck twice in a row

I applied again for ADSL. Got turned down because:

1) No more ports
2) "The lines in your area are not DSL compatible"

Sigh.

That's bad news thewanted_. But they should do an upgrade.

I also had an interesting development. Some Telkom telesales person from Durban called me to offer me ADSL at the bussiness. I told him we were already using it and then said I was waiting for it at home. I told him what Telkom had told me and he said according to my system you can get ADSL. So why does some guy in Durban "know" I can get ADSL and the people up here think I can't.

So he put in another application for me.

P.S I'll ask Regardt to put in his application again then there will be 3 applications in our area. :)

I phoned again today and got what appeared to be a friendly helpful person on tyhe end of the line.

According to what he told me, my lines are ADSL capable, but there are no ports available at the Honeydew exchange. Apparently when I first put in my application they had to decide which exchange I would connect to as my area is shown as Weltevreden Park, but I'm really in Randpark Ridge Ext 34 (I think) but now I'm going to be connected to Honeydew...sigh...

Currently my application is at "the planning stage", now does that sound familiar or what. I guess I'll just keep bugging them every 48 hours.

you have no idea how close you are to the truth with that statement!!

That's randburg exchange situated very close to where Andy McGibbons' shop used to be. 794 may be Bromhof, not sure anymore.. it's been a long while

I'm in the same boat...but now waiting for port asign...Does this mean I have finally over come the cable thing? after 3yrs of waiting???...
