Base clock for the Galax 970 is 1164Mhz (1317Mhz with boost) - R5400.00

To be fair, the price difference looks more up to Wootware being more willing to cut the price than Takealot...the non-sale price they both list is within R100 of each other.

I could, but I really want to save some cash so that I can upgrade other components. They do have an R9 380 Gigabyte G1 Gaming 4GB which is going for R3999 at the moment. I think I might order it today.
The next cheapest one I am considering is the MSI Twin Frozr 4GB for about R4100.
Using a Gigaybyte R7 260X OC edition for over a year now and it's running flawlessly. It's super quiet in the day to day ops but during gaming it can get hot, as hot as my Gainward 550Ti.
Oh and I've never had an AMD driver issue for the past year.

I would actually assume the R9 380 to be better than the GTX960 due to better support for DirectX12, whereby the CPU can be skipped for queuing graphics.
The R9 380 would be a better buy for future proofing.
(Am currently running 2x R9 280X (desktop), and a GTX960M (laptop), so am not a fan boy, just reading up on all the cards.)

I had a similar question a few months back, 970 / 960 or 380 and I went with the 380, haven't had any issues with it and am happy with my decision. Will see how Fallout 4 runs though

Fallout 4 is one of the reasons I am upgrading my card. I think it should run fine at 1080p since the recommended card is the R9 290X 4GB or equivalent. I don't mind if games run at lower than ultra settings but I do hope it will last a couple years before games have to run at low.

Maybe not answering the question but amd drivers have a higher cpu overhead than nvidia ones and that's why amd gpus perform better with intel cpus due to the higher performance per thread.
With dx12 & multi-gpu pooling one seems to get better performance when combining amd+nvidia vs a pure xfire or sli setup.

Not with DirectX12 anymore though I would think?
Hopefully we will see more/quicker Dx12 adoption soon.
Think it was DX11, unfortunately we don't have any DX12 games yet.

When DX12 does hit current gen amd gpus are gonna perform better than current gen nvidia gpus, not sure what future greenland (arctic islands) & kepler have in store.

Yep, but for now AMD is better if you are planning ahead for Dx12.
The new nvidia cards are coming out what time next year?
In the 960/380 & 970/390 price brackets go AMD.

Nvidea just released drivers today in order to optimize it for Fallout 4. Need to wait for AMD to release it as well.
