Let's say one books a guesthouse for 4 nights and you pay the deposit of 50%

You subsequently then need to change the booking to two nights.

What are your rights? Can the guesthouse force you to pay 4 nights?

What does the Guest House's return policy state? In other words, the one you agreed to when you made the booking?

when you paid the deposit you agreed to the terms. unless its way in advance I would expect them to expect you to uphold your end.

I only have to pay for two nights.

If they tried to force me, I would have gone and found problems and left after two nights without paying the balance.

Depends how advanced. A week is very little time to rent out the time you reserved.
Ask them to meet you halve way. Pay for three.
If they do not want to assist you: Pay. You bought it.

I don't know what you do.
How would you feel if mr.PH do it to you.
The B&B has done nothing wrong. Why must they be punished.

Yes - because that is what you agreed to and they could have let the rooms out to someone else, but because you cant plan properly you expect the guesthouse to loose money?

They have loads of enquiries. They admitted as much, and could easily fill the room.

Read the cancellation policy Patty, if its in writing, it's binding.
It's entirely at the discretion of the guesthouse if they want to negotiate with you or not.
