Hi all.
So I've been lurking for a while and have no finally decided to register and throw my 2c into the pot!
Every time I read the posts on this site I get more and more frustrated with the way things are run in this country. I'm not going to harp on about how crap Telkom are as I'm sure everyone with an ounce of intelligence would know that.
My biggest concern is that there is a lot of talk and, alas, not much action on the part of ICASA et al... I suppose one could sit here all day and cross one's fingers, but until someone with enough authority gets in on the act, it looks like very little in terms of real progress will happen.
I fully hope that with the continued efforts of the fine folk here and elsewhere, that someone in authority WILL take action and until that day comes we shouldn't lose heart.
For my sins I have applied for an ADSL account. I am starting an new business venture which requires me to upload a large number of images to a server overseas (where I can get more than triple the space and bandwidth for a fraction of local hosting - typical, it's not just Telkom squeezing money out of us) and it was the lesser of two evils. Either pay a horrendous amount of money for a phone bill using dial-up or pay a horrendous amount of money for ADSL!
I for one am a strong supporter of an uncapped system. I only hope that before long we will see either an uncapped system or at least affordable realistic caps (if there is even such a thing - a realistic cap) Say R250 100GB cap...
Anyhoo, just thought I'd say hi. I wish you all the best with your continued efforts in making true Broadband a reality in South Africa. Anything I can do to help, please let me know.... (if any sys admins are reading this...)
One last little thought. ADSL seems to be viewed as a luxury item, even though it's a nessecity for most business'. Wouldn't it get us further if we showed the powers that be that it's not just an exclusive white rich boys club and that it has many many benifits for poor rural balck areas (a simplification, but I hope you get my drift) how much would education be improved at little cost if there were broadband schools with a central teacher giving lessons via it? Think the Schools radio in the ozzie outback...
One way of getting a more positive government reaction perhaps?

Am making a cluster of channels to work together on the shadowfire network so soon will be able to reach more ppl quicker.

It took me more than a year to join simply because I dont have the internet at home, and I hate being left out of a thread if I have already had a say in it.
The sad thing is, tomorrow I go home, and the next time I will be able to post is after the big T has installed my adsl at home (Ordered 2-3 weeks ago).
