Guildwars + 3g

well they say in the FAQ that is very playable under dialup 56 k ... so im wondering if it latency or sumfin that makes it so.

ppl have said somewhere that u can play WoW on 3g , and if thats true then guildwars must work.

i just want confirmation from someone playing GuildWars or WoW ... then ill feel more safe ... hehehe

I forgot which thread, but someone was definitely playing Guildwars on 3G. Have you tried a search?

I play GuildWars on 3G no problem. If my connection is "as expected" then it works fine. In other words, if i get the speed i'm use to [i.e ~150 kbits/sec] . There has been plenty of moments of unplayable lag though, i have yet to determine whether it is related to 3G or the Anet Server.

There is definite proof that the european servers have had problems [when your entire team goes "LAG" at the same time, then you know it's not your connection...]

On a side note:
Average Usage ~ 3-5 MB/hour .

If you are getting the entire game streamed [like me], then above is totally different then it's ~10 MB for each new zone you enter [the first time]. The entire game is about 600-800 MB of "streaming" which were spread out over 2 months as i progressed through the campaign [on demand streaming].

Either way i have the entire game by now [well most of it] so i get the mentioned usage. If you got the CDs/someone else's files, copy that instead, will save you alot of bandwidth.

Wow diabolus, I honestly wouldn't have thought it possible if I had not read about this in another thread.
What sort of latency do you get on 3G?
What is your error rate like?
Where are you located?

Sorry for all the questions, but I'm really interested in this.

Latency is the usual for international [600-800 ms]
Error Rate? Now i obviously don't play it 24-7,maybe an hour or two per session and
during that time i usually don' get alot of "errors". Main "errors" are either insane lag [the source is tricky to determine as it's a combination of Anet Servers,3G and the fact that they stream content "while you play" [ i.e. patches/enhancements are delivered this way] ] or of course a plain disconnect [which thankfully don't happen that often].

I'm in Stellenbosch

The game show the speed at which data is streamed in-game and i've had speeds of up to 24 kbytes/sec but just as often had it at 1 kbytes/sec as well [speed seem to vary quite alot though]. I'd say you're fine with about 10 kbytes/sec and the usual latency, anything slower and you start feeling the lag.

Have to keep in mind GuildWars is heavily based on "instanced" areas. This means every team gets their own version of the map/zone, which makes for less lag in cases as there is only your team to keep track off in a specific area. Same happens with Arena-battles, Two teams goes up against each other, they get their own map [so it's not just an open landscape where everyone run around like everquest/ultima]. There are of course "hubs" or "outposts" where you can do trading/create teams/show off and such but that's that.

This does not apply to GuildWars only, i also trial-played Eve-Online, DAOC, Anarchy Online and WoW with the same kind of performance on 3G. So as long as you stick to MMORPGS you should be fine imho [anything else like counterstrike/UT/BF2/COD is probably not going to work well, nevermind the bandwidth those games use]

Thanks for the response. Very interesting.
By error rate I actually meant dropped packets. Sorry for not being more clear on that.

That i do not know, never investigated that. I just log on and if i can enter a 4 v 4 arena-war without any hiccups then i'm happy :P
