Gum Graft (Surgery) Cost

Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone here knows how much it costs to perform a Gum Graft at a South African Periodontist. These procedures are usually not covered by Medical Aid as it falls under Specialised Dentistry.

Any feedback will be appreciated.
 
You'll probably have to go to a periodontist to be examined and given a quotation, because the cost will vary from periodontist to periodontist and will depend on the size of the area that requires grafting. Have you confirmed with your medical aid that they don't pay for gum grafts? Gum grafts are partly cosmetic, partly functional, a bit like braces, so I would have thought that they'd at least pay a portion.
 
Also, to my knowledge, any underlying periodontal disease first has to be brought under control before you can have a gum graft, and there are other factors too that affect the viabilty of a gum graft. So they're probably going to want to examine you first before suggesting a treatment plan or giving a quotation.

Thanks for the feedback.
I am going for an appointment within the next 2 months where I will find out more about the cost and procedures to follow. I will also contact the Medical Aid to find out if they cover anything, but I doubt they will. I only have a Discovery Coastal Core plan without a MSA, and this surgery (if it comes to that) will probably not be performed in the hospital.

Went for the surgery earlier today. It is quite a fast procedure, didn't even take an hour, but now the pain is starting to kick in. I paid about R4700 for it.

How much was the initial appointment? Will it be only one procedure or was this just the first one?

So the initial visit was about R800, but I also went to the mouth hygienist as part of that visit. My follow up is next week Friday where the Periodontist will check if my gums are healing correctly and so on. I only have a Hospital plan, so I pay cash for everything, and will hopefully be able to claim it back from SARS next year. This should be the only procedure required for now if all looks fine at the follow up.

Know its been forever but where did you go to for thus procedure and were you happy with it?
 
Fellow I know who runs a motor spares shop had a medical disaster with a periodontal procedure

He was there for 4 extractions. The first 2 went ok but the doctor struggled for 20 mins with no 3. He used what was described as a small rotary saw to cut into the jawbone

That night the pain was so bad he could not sleep. In the 9 months since the procedure, the pain has only lessened slightly. No medication lasts more than 30 mins.

He has lost 45kg and cannot work and his eyesight is failing, apparently due to some inflammation. He is 39 years old

The periodontist said that these things can occur.

The bill was R24k

Any update on your gums since procedure in terms of gum health and recession. How long did the discomfort last ?
