GWM HOVER

I might be lucky, but why do you see so many on the road if they are so bad? You say you only one drive in one, I've had mine for 2 years

Good luck...as I said, you are one of the lucky ones. The ones that they tried to sell around here were all a disaster, that's all I am saying. I am sure you will find 20 duds in a batch of 1000...pity they were all sent here.

I think the new generation of the Hover is much better than the first iteration...

But yeah, I personally will still stay away from them for a few more years...

One drive in one that had 3000 km on the clock, and was rattling as though it had done 300 000...it was already streaking rust from joints, the interior plastic was falling off, and after reaching 120 on the freeway I very quickly slowed down as the car was almost undriveable at that speed.

Citi Golf?

In reply to Luke, I don't like Malema and the roads in the little bit of first world called Cape Town are fine. I do like the Hover though and please take the time read the comments by the guy who has well over 100,000 kms to really understand what a lot of nonsense is bandied about by people who know very little.

You are one of the lucky ones, obviously. I would seriously have written this car off if I had continued to drive at 120...it was unbelievably bad, as were the other 20 or so that were originally sold in our area. In the end, the dealer took many of therm back and used them as demo stock, and then closed that side of the business.

You weren't a a Hover though, right? It was one of the GWM bakkies, wasn't it?

You missed my :D ? I hope you enjoy your Hover...at least you and Milos will have something in common :)

Ok, i've been very happy with my 2,4l 2x4 Hover, which we purchassed in 2008. It's been a pleasure to drive.
We drive it on- and off road without any hassles or any "bits" falling off.
The interior is not the most modern, but has clean lines, very comfortable, fully electronic, leather (not pleather) seats. (ps. the leather interior comes standard with the Hover) . We drive it on- and off road without any hassles! It gives a smooth ride and handles amazingly for a 2x4!
And the cherry on top has been that the most expensive service (without a motor plan) was R1500!
I honestly can't complain about this vehicle!

I am quite amazed by the amount of ignorance in this thread. I have had Mercs, Subaru, currently an Audi A4 and I have ordered a Hover 2.4 4x4 which I should get this saturday. I have watched and monitored for about the last 2 years the Hover and i have spent the last 2 weeks on the internet in the evenings looking at videos, reading reviews and looking at EURO ratings.

Ignorance? Yes - we south africans are total and utter idiots! We THINK we know it all. YES - including me in the past! We assume we are more inteligent that the last guy that posted. Well people, IF the "clever" people in this thread REALLY did their homework the Hover has a EURO NCAP rating of 4!! IT is based on the Isuzu Axiom and has a Mitsubishi engine, Borg Warner 4wd system (ala PORSCHE Cayenne), Airbags from SIEMENS and Brakes from BOSCH to name a few things.

Yes the engine will not be as powerful as a Toyota but it WILL go where they go - do your home work!! Secondy, I was buying my wife a car a few years ago and she did local driving - I got her the Kia Cerato which had, then, just come out. I was told by VERY "inteligent" people (like some in this thread) NOT to buy that rubbish! Well It has not 1 days problems, is paid off and I still own it.

I am in the fortunate position to be ABLE buy a Toyota 4x4 fortuner or Prado for that metter - but why?? Now i can get a Hover 4x4 with all the typical nicities, add supercharger to get 160KW, nudgebar, towbar, smash and grab, cruise control AND a trailer for under 300k. Now no one needs a brain (so relax) to figure that's a bargain. The engine is proven!! It is old tech!!! It is a CUV - crossover! It was born on a chassis made for TOUGH times!! So it won't win any speed races - BUT from the reviews i have read it is not a racing car on tar but hit the dirt and it comes alive. Who speeds in 4L anyways?

So now we will have a BIG comfy family "car" to travel with and we can go offroad too. I can continue to pay what i pay for a nice house and be able to take the family on holiday every couple of months and live a comfortable life rather than say I have a R12K car payment this month i can say I have R8k to do with as i please!! Make sense? Hell yeah.

But again - I am a notch above some :) Good bye Audi - you served me well but for interior room you are NO competition! Even my 3y/o agrees!!

Well shearder it certainly looks as if you have done your homework and that you are very proud of your bargain basement bargain.

ENJOY and please give us regular reports on how well it is going.

I'll give you a update, after 2 years of having the Hover 2.4 I've had no problems with it yet. In fact, I'm taking it to the low veld next week again

Absolutely! I was also scheptical hence keeping eyes and ears open for the last 2 years. I was going to replace the Kia 2 years ago - hence the "vigil" on the Hover.

I intend taking it for a run this weekend to pick up "noises and rattles" but I am positive. Wife and I, during the test drive, did the midrand drive about on highway etc and not a sound.

It sure has - you can even see the NCAP test on youtube. I am at the office so i cannot access some sites to get the links. But you will find it google *"gwm hover" NCAP 4* and you will get it.

When i get home tonight there is an Ausie site that had a LOT about the GWMs. These guys seem fanatical and it is a good read. They have terain like ours and seem to be more than happy. I will also take some picks when i get it. The ONLY extra i haven't added as yet is the supercharger as i first want to "run it in" and pick up any problems rather than be told "it was the supergcharger's fault" - but will have the towbar, nudge bar, smash and grab, cruise control oh and the new trailer! I must take some pics!

How do you find it on the long road? I only spent about 45 mins with it (and wife) during the test drive and I took it on the highway and up hills and small bumpy pot-holed roads and it was great!

for R13000 I believe SaC (steve's) can give it 115kw, more torque etc. At GWM themselves a new exhaust and ECU upgrade also gives about the same for around R7500 i hear. But again i just want to get over the "new car" hill and sort any probs - like my merc not wanting to change gears cos of a split pin that cam out LOL

It's C-NCAP, not Euro NCAP.
