Hi guys,

What do you all pay for your gym membership fees? I recently got a letter from Virgin Active stating they raising my premium membership from R529 to R579 (R50). Never even realised I was paying R529. Does that not seem a bit excessive?

Yoh that is VERY high. I pay r70/month at my work gym. Love it.

Sorry I'm not much help here. Kick up a stink dude.

I don't think its worth it, but thats my opinion.

You probably need to get onto Discovery or an equivalent from the other life insurers or medical aid's so that you can get a discount on the subscription.

Alternatively find a smaller gym in your area, they do exist and charge a lot less.

Oh I also recall you could pay less if you pay upfront. e.g. pay upfront for a full years subscription or for 2 or 3 years etc.

Last time I used a "big" gym, i paid about R300 at Planet Fitness, but that was about 4 years ago.

Just get your Discovery Vitality discount man. That'll sort you out.

Went to planet fitness looking for a prepaid contract, they wanted me to pay R7000 or something up front fee. Just laughed on the way out... Gym prices are ridiculous

I have a gym membership for sale if you're interested. R100per month :)

Nearly R600 does seem excessive. What do you get for premium membership?

I don't think those prices are worth it either, but I haven't noticed much in the way of small gyms around where I am anymore. Used to be some nice ones, but I suspect they've all been driven out of business by the big gyms.

You're paying to use all the Virgin Actives in the country.
Just downgrade to use the one you go to the most often.

or

Get yourself a cycle and some weights to use at home and Bob's you uncle.

A single club costs R499. I wouldn't consider that much of a saving, but yeah. I'm gonna need alot of weights ;)

Go jogging. Get a kayak / road bike / MTB or all three. Or are you a weight pumping charna?

EDIT: ah, a weight pumping charna. Perhaps Paul has some advice on where's cheapest?

+1, if you are with Vitality you only pay 20% of the club costs. Hence I am paying about R90 - R100pm.

If your going to make the most of your gym membership by using the shower facilities, going more than 4 times a week and attending the classes (Spinning/Pilates/Killer-abs etc), then R600 sounds about reasonable.
