ha ha ha...

I really don't get the logic behind that. You don't need a HD tv for the consoles, why are you adding that to the price? Then you might as well say, to get a better gaming experience from your pc, you need a 24inch lcd. That pushes up the price for the pc with a few thousand.

The last time I checked, pc games was about R300 each? How do you get 3 pc games out of R500 - R600?

What is the point of buying a 360 or ps3 if you are planing on playing it on a regular TV? Might as well stick with your ps2 then.

Icyrus, I take it you haven't seen Gears of war? It's realtime near photo realistic, besides the difference in the amount of stuff that can be on screen at any one time. That looks good on any telly.

If you're talking Hi-Def movies, like Blu-ray, it's pointless on an SDTV.

I just love the arguments presented from folk who dont own either a X360 or a PS3. Kinda like saying my fantasy Ferrari will beat your fantasy McLaren.

Yawn.

That's like saying gameplay doesn't matter, it's all about the graphics?

Well that is the ps3 and 360's big selling point isn't it? From what I hear people who care most about gameplay get a Wii.

I haven't seen it demo'd on a normally TV but normal TVs generally having a max resolution of 800x600 doesn't inspire me with confidence of it looking amazing. Neither does the TV's pixel size, but thats another story.

Seems like the jury is still out on HD DVD versus Blu-ray.

Seems like you're wrong... ;)

The NY Post has just published a new article on the next-gen DVD format war. According to writer Lou Lumenick, retailers are set to abandon the HD DVD format next year due to lagging sales.

The Departed recently premiered on both formats, and the Blu-ray version came up trumps, selling more copies than the HD DVD version. According to the article:

...sales of Blu-ray discs have exploded to nearly three times those of HD DVD discs since Christmas.

It's the first clear sign that consumers are choosing sides in the nastiest video format war since VHS emerged victorious over Sony's Betamax machines in the 1980s.

"The format war is in its final phase," crows Steve Feldstein of 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, which, like Sony and Disney, is releasing titles exclusively on Blu-ray. "It's never been a question of if Blu-ray will pass HD DVD, but a matter of when."

Some retailers are now claiming it's safe to buy a Blu-ray players without fear that that the format will lose. Analyst Alison Casey, from London's Understanding & Solutions group predicts that retailers will abandon the format some time in 2008. Reffering to European retailers, Casey said:

"They never wanted two formats. It confuses consumers and creates problems with them with returns. They're looking to go to a single format as soon as possible."

Ha Ha Ha .....

Lol, EA Classic titles :D

Ja EA Classics, forgot about those ones... +- R99 a game give you about 5-6 PC games for a R500 - R600 Xbox Title.. You get PC games in the range of R189 - R299, so you can get +- 2-3 Pc games for the price of a Xbox 360 game. (Or to be more accurate 2.48698765 PC games for the price of a Xbox 360 game....)

Yay! At least with my old X360 i still have a CHOICE in the matter! Just imagine if Blue-gay had flopped I would be sitting with a redundant piece of hardware at my feet!

Ah, now that you cleared up that we're not talking about new games... I just looked on Take2, some 360 games are selling for R250. Can this be true, cheaper than pc games??? ;)

Luckily it didn't... :)

Some X360 platinum titles have reached maturity, kinda like some great PS2 platinum games you find for sale.

Dude that's an old article... You can't use old articles to refute newer ones on the same subject that's just insane.

Anyway I think Blu-Ray will win, but I don't think we are ever really going to notice or care.

Blu-Ray or HD DVD won't become mainstream until at least 2010 and by that time we will be downloading HD movies straight onto our Xboxes/ Playstations /PVR's whatever.

The entire Blu-Ray / HD DVD war is a non entity in my life...

I don't see how the date of the article matters in this case. What I was showing is that 3 big movie companies are already only releasing movies on Blueray. But whatever...

Depends what you mean with mainstream? Even some shops in SA are already stocking it.

Retro, those big 3 companies have been backing Blu-Ray from the beginning and the part that you made bold was how the format war is over.

I personally wish it was over but don't expect HD to give in so easily.

Yes I also realise you can buy Blu-Ray movies here but when I say mainstream I mean when the majority of households with DVD's start talking about buying one.

You have been able to buy iMacs in SA for ages now but I wouldn't call them Mainstream. I just don't see the majority of people having a HDTV before 2010 and without that Blu-ray and HD DVD are useless.

Well now that Makro are advertising Blu-ray dvd's at R 299.00.... and I'm betting its not long before they hit the shelves of the Video Stores... I'm betting its not going to take all that long for them to take off.

The part I made bold was actually about those 3 companies. That last part just happened to be in the same paragraph. ;)

Hey so they are :D

But with the cheapest Blu-Ray player in SA being R6199 I don't think it is mainstream yet and it won't be until the stand alone players are out and affordable.

Affordable is under R1000 IMO...

I can't see this happening for at least 18 months (Mid 2008) and then about another 18 months before everyone feels they need one.

By that time HD DVD could have one or IPTV could be available.... There are to many variables for now to decide a winner in the long run.

@TheBossMan -

The PC cost thing doesn't work. By comparison - you can run a 360 with a PC monitor so that falls out of the equation so if you current compareequivalent hardware you're looking at R4000 (added VGA cable) for a 360 versus R8000-R10000 for a comparable "box".

On average console games are R150-R200 more than PC games So that's 20-25 games to even out, but that excludes the fact that you'll have to upgrade the hardware annually (+R2000/year?).

Just spoke to a friend at the Mr. Video head office in CT to find out if he knows anything about their plans on Blueray movies. He phoned back saying they should have Blueray movies in their shops by end July, as well as Blueray players. Just the big shops to start with, but at least it's a start...

:)
