Hack attack downs Twitter

Twitter, the popular micro-blogging site, has been hacked and is down. The web service was taken offline after it was a victim of a co-ordinated attack, disappointing the numerous users of the short messaging site.

The website was subjected to a 'denial-of-service attack', Twitter's status blog said.

In a denial-of-service attack, a company's servers are flooded with huge volumes of unwanted data in a bid to disable them. This typically happens when hundreds of remote-controlled virus-infected computers contact the site at the same time.

It is not clear when the attack exactly took place on Twitter, but it appears to have suffered a global blackout.

Although there is no clue yet as to who is behind the attack, Twitter said that it is trying to find out the reason and the people behind the blackout.

Twitter's status blog had initially said that the site was down, but later added: 'We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.'

The company's growing popularity has led to many a malware maker turning their ire at it, and people believe that this could be the work of these malware makers.

Looks like he/she/they also pwnd Facebook! Wish I could thank them for that, as my kids can now go do their homework...

Ongoing denial-of-service attack 4 hours ago

We are defending against a denial-of-service attack, and will update status again shortly.

Update: the site is back up, but we are continuing to defend against and recover from this attack.

Update (9:46a): As we recover, users will experience some longer load times and slowness. This includes timeouts to API clients. We’re working to get back to 100% as quickly as we can.

We are determining the cause and will provide an update shortly.

Hopefully Twitter will be downed for good. Next - FaceBook and Myspace. Rid the Web of the Web 2.0 hyped up garbage please.

oh well... back to Facebook... at least that's working :D

But then the internet would be super fast and the hole in the ozone layer patched.....the children would go outside and play again.

If I hadn't been browsing through MyBB I would have missed this non event altogether. :)

Good to know about these things though.

What I to look forward to? Have tried to keep my daughter's spare time varied with limited TV and PC time. Long may this last ... :)
