[-]Max budget: 18K, but hoping to get away with around 14K[/-]

Looks like this is going to come in under 10K which is awesome :D

@qriffen:
You need Hackintosh to run MAC OS X on an Intel based system that isn't from Apple.

I'm running it myself on my Core i7 860 + 8GB RAM for iPhone software development.
My PC box set me back about R12k, where as a similar Apple PC would cost me R24k in SA!

Unfortunately there isn't a legal way to run MAC OS X on a non-Apple PC :(

@dequadin:
You don't need such an expensive motherboard. A simple Asus P8P67-M @ ~R1400 would suffice.
Get a decent 450W PSU, and a cheap PCI-E AMD graphics card with dual digital output. I think the Hackintosh works better with AMD graphics cards. I have an HD 5670 myself, which was fairly expensive for just work related stuff, but I wanted to be able to play games too.

If you're not going for a high-end graphics card, then even a cheap case such as the Coolermaster Elite 310 (which is what I'm using) would work.

The i7 2600k should work on stock cooling very well, unless you want to OC to like 4.4GHz, then I would suggest an aftermarket cooler like the Cogage True Spirit.

@dequadin - okay, probably gonna get flamed for this, but you say your budget is about R14k -
You do know that you can get a real mac for that price?
You get the XCode Development software free with the OS.

Why not look at a 13" MacBook Pro dual Core i5 2.3GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HDD - R11999 with an external screen R1000 extra (works well for me)
or a iMac 21" - Core 2 Quad 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD, 512MB ATI 6750 - R12499

Both of these are less than your budget - the desktop will make a pretty decent windows gaming machine too...

I'm selling my hackintosh R10k and it has better specs than you are thinking of putting together for R18k, pm me if your interested.

Pada what software are you using for iphone developement?
You can only use Xcode for iPhone development, and it only runs on OS X.

A MacBook Pro with a Dual Core i5 is fine for development, until you have to do profiling.
If you're doing profiling, then you can't go without a proper quad/hex core CPU.

What screens are you okes using for Hackingtoshes? Those High-Res Mac screens are awesome! PC stuff seems to top out at 1080p, unless you pay top dolla. Still worth it I guess, as comes in at less than a Mac :)

when you do the installation... only have 1 stick of ram and one hdd installed. then add them later after you are all set up.

Updated my original list with some actual components. Coming out a lot less than I expected :D

You could save yourself a few hundred bucks more if you bought from someplace like Rebeltech, btw, and you could definitely get a better graphics card for R800, unless there is some reason you need shared memory. Otherwise, looks good, but you might want to get a SSD with the extra cash, since Lion is finally adding TRIM support for OSX afaik.

Look at the IPS panel based Dell 27" & 30" models ;)

If you don't need much GPU power, then stick to it. Otherwise a GT240 or a HD5770, imo, but I'm not running a hackintosh so I'm not sure of the particular models.

You can actually save another R500+ if you go for the 2600 non-k and a H67 mobo if you don't intend overclocking.
That's what I have. See sig. You do not want to lose a day or two if the 5550 packs up.
You can get this 5670, which should be a better. HWCompare

What about the Gigabyte GT430 - 1GB GDDR3, 128-Bit R777.59?

There is a problem with using some Nvidia Fermi (4XX, 5XX) cards with current drivers on a hackintosh that causes the system to freeze, aka the Fermi Freeze. Apparently there is a workaround, though, which involves having something running in the background, constantly using <10% CPU/GPU. I'm not sure if the GT430 is affected, it seems to be only 460/450 and 5XX cards, but you will definitely want to check.

What is your max budget for the GPU? You might find a better GDDR5 over the GDDR3
