Hi All

For those as frustrated as I am about the IS news server and IS local speeds in general, I would like to inform of the process I am about to follow. About a month ago I had bad service from ADT and after struggling to get hold of anyone to assist, I logged a formal complaint against them on www.hellopeter.com  - I am planning to do the same today against IS (Not Openweb as the news server is not theirs) in an effort to get to the bottom of this. If I'm going to pay for something, it better works...period. Want to see if I can CC some high flyers in the company while I'm at it :D Also spoke to my buddy who's the editor of a huge local news paper and he is keen on taking them on as he too has a IS local only account.

Thanx

Has IS ever publically promoted the news servers as one of their services? If so getting a record of that might be an idea.

BTW - there's nothing official about lodging a complaint with hellopeter. A lot also depends on if IS is a company that [-]kicks-back[/-] responds or doesnt.

proff i dunno what you doing wrong china but i have download 30 gigs from IS news server this month and its only the 19th got another 10 gig account today

maybe you should report yourself to hellopeter for not having a clue how the IS news server workx :)

i love the IS news server yes i never get over 50 but i dont care 30-50 is fine by me

tibby IS news server is great for porn and warez man :)

You do not pay for the news server. It is a value added service. Secondly, there are a number of major technical reasons why there are complaints. Any server which is expected to push 300-500 clients at 400kb/s (24.4 meg connection) is going to struggle in South Africa. Thirdly, IS's news server is primarily a news server. Why on earth would you need news at 400kb/s?

Don't get me wrong. You're compeltely entitled to complain, but you are likely to receive a similar response. The news server is not a right.

Nor is retaining customers so lets all hope they dont adopt that sort of attitude.

Well hopefully IS won't feign ignorance and go:

"Oh dear! We didn't realise there were people downloading content on our servers! We'll terminate it right now." :D

Hopefully they wont just focus on the News Server aspect of the complaint

Telkom, the sno, and ISPs have a legal obligation to guarantee minimum broadband speeds - and that's telling it how it is. :)

Ok, so let me try to understand what you are going to do here.

You are going to Complain on Hellopeter.com about the IS News Server telling them that you are not able to download PIRATE software.

Not a good idea.;)

While I agree complaining on HP is a futile exercise please note the full extent of the complaint and not just the news server aspect.

In this regard ICASA is the body to complain to if you feel IS is not abiding by the regulations.

I logged a formal complaint against them on www.hellopeter.com

Several problems:

Firstly, HelloPeter is extremely not formal. And since IS clients are all corporates (unlike ADT) IS are very unlikely to buy into Peter Cheales' corporate blackmail racket. So you are not going to get any joy there.

You have no contract with IS, only with your ISP.

You did not purchase local content, only access to local content.

Any complaints you have should be with OpenWeb and Telkom.

killadoob...I know exactly what I'm doing - I've been downloading from NNTP servers long before you probably knew it existed, so please spare me
Now here's something to consider...1,617 replies listed under "IS news server down" means that there are a lot of people who are getting what I'm getting...00000.3k - now that to me is unacceptable which ever way you look at it.

Funny though - other ISP's also have "value added" services which by the way does work...infact, SAIX has a news server that, even though not as good as the IS news server...it does work - so, just because it's a value added service I'm not allowed to say anything...me don't think so.

What really pisses me off is that most of us that went for local only thought we would at least have access to the news server...at the moment I'm staring at my connection and hey I'm getting a whopping 000000000.8kbps - GREAT!!!

Well I have a 512k line from IS ( the one with the Cisco router ) and cannot complain about speeds at all. If you are having some local speed problems, maybe it is because what you are accessing has to go through the peering point, which Telkom do their best to make difficult.

The other point is that even if I had a 1 megabit circuit that Telkom had upgraded to 4, the contract with IS would still be for 1 megabit, so one would not be in a position to complain.

If you want to moan about the news server I suggest go directly to IS - you don't want every hellopeter and their dog leeching p0rnz & warez off it! Or sign up with Easynews.

That may be so, but it would be extremely unwise to lodge a complaint about a service that you are using for either p0rn or pirate software. The only possible conclusions to such a complaint are:

1) IS gets slapped on the wrist and discontinues the service
2) You complaint gets thrown out as illegal or frivilous

The first option is bad for everyone and the second is bad for you. I can't imagine that you would be very popular (or happy) if the IS Newsgroup service was discontinued.

OK, who agrees with Abe? - If it's not worth it, then I'll let it go - NO problem.
