Hadron collider sets new energy record

sweet, gonna be cool when they pump this baby up to full power. Or at least when they eventually sift through all the data, anyway.

A teraelectronvolt (TeV) is equivalent to the energy level of a flying mosquito, while CERN wants to ultimately achieve maximum power of 7.0 teraelectronvolts or trillion electronvolts in its bid to replicate the big bang

Can someone explain how a TeV is equivalent to the energy level of flying mosquito?

I am  :D

Cool! Are there still people who believe this thing will swallow up the universe?

According to the well-established properties of gravity, described by Einstein’s relativity, it is impossible for microscopic black holes to be produced at the LHC. There are, however, some speculative theories that predict the production of such particles at the LHC. All these theories predict that these particles would disintegrate immediately. Black holes, therefore, would have no time to start accreting matter and to cause macroscopic effects.

I'm no particle physicist but i can hazard a few guesses:

Wikipedia's page on kinetic energy states: The kinetic energy of an object is the extra energy which it possesses due to its motion. It is defined as the work needed to accelerate a body of a given mass from rest to its current velocity. Having gained this energy during its acceleration, the body maintains this kinetic energy unless its speed changes.

1 TeV: one teraelectronvolt (a million million electronvolts), or 1.602Ă—10-7 J, about the kinetic energy of a flying mosquito

The LHC is accelerating proton's. Proton's are an order of magnitude smaller than a mosquito. So it's quite awsome for something the size of a proton to be carrying the same kinetic energy as a mosquito. (or 7 times!)

The LHC is planning on 7 TeV per beam path, with 14 TeV when the beams collide.

Don't quote me on this :)

----

On the LHC wiki page:

Once or twice a day, as the protons are accelerated from 450 GeV to 7 TeV, the field of the superconducting dipole magnets will be increased from 0.54 to 8.3 teslas (T). The protons will each have an energy of 7 TeV, giving a total collision energy of 14 TeV. At this energy the protons have a Lorentz factor of about 7,500 and move at about 99.9999991% of the speed of light.[24] It will take less than 90 microseconds (μs) for a proton to travel once around the main ring – a speed of about 11,000 revolutions per second. Rather than continuous beams, the protons will be bunched together, into 2,808 bunches, so that interactions between the two beams will take place at discrete intervals never shorter than 25 nanoseconds (ns) apart. However it will be operated with fewer bunches when it is first commissioned, giving it a bunch crossing interval of 75 ns.

Hmmm, reminds me of that pic of teh oke working at the LHC who looks exactly liek Gordon Freeman from Halflife. LOL.

rofl!!!! Man, parallel universes, monster, woot. Glad I live in SA, nobody cares about Africa. :-)

3.5 TEV!

At 3.5 TeV with both beams new energy records being set (with beam)

As I understand it the LHC systems are still being tested at new higher energy levels after the year end shut down, but 3.5 TEV is impressive!

Can't wait for the collisions to start!

They might, once Malema starts badmouthing them creepy crawlies from the Dungeon Dimensions...

Bloody necro. Was like "wtf, thought they went up to max till shut down and now they upped the energy?"

Don't get me excited over old news. bastard ;P
