In the build up to the release of halo 3 alot of IDIOTS put it out there that the games graphics were not up to scratch (i remember reading nowhere near gears of war) or next gen.

well

obviously they were wrong

played it last night on a conventional television and was still blown away

i have gears of war as well and the graphics are just as good

so if you have not bought it because of graphics issue, dont let it put you off

by the way

THE GAMEPLAY IS UNTOUCHABLE!!!!!!!

You know why your statement has no credibility? Cos you reckon it looks good on SD

Was never a HALO fan. Hated the brightly coloured aliens. thought it to be simplistic...
imagine my surprise last night when i couldnt put the controller down. just so much fun. and playing on hard, the AI is alot of fun to fight. and the graphics is stunning. great lighting without being a distraction.

well abev

by standard tv i meant a samsung flat screen tv with the RGB cables plugged in

dont know if that changes anything

i can only imagine what it looks like on an LCD

i will experience it one day im sure

lol.. keep trolling coz its all you can do. I bet nothing on the PS3 will reach $170 million on its first launch date in one country ever.

He's trolling? You are the one making mention of something totally irrelevant to the topic.

He also happens to be quite correct in saying that trying to judge graphical quality on a standard definition TV is sheer madness. I remember not knowing what the fuss around Gears' gfx was all about when i played it on my 74cm Flatron...then I purchased my LCD and the glory that is the Unreal engine was revealed.

I haven't personally played Halo3 yet so I'll reserve my judgement (for now) in comparing it's visuals to other games.

Well if a person says it already looks GOOD on a SD wont it look even better on a 720p or higher? Oh yes, please reserve judgement till you see it as well. ;)

Of course it will...that is logical. But we're talking comparatively here.

That's like looking at a lump of **** through a blurred lens and comparing it to a lump of chocolate viewed with the same lens. Both look similar. Improve the lens and subtle details will become visible...then decide which you'd rather eat.

Now now, who's feeding the trolls? ;)

HD is not the defining feature of "good graphics". Does real life need 1080p to look real on telly?

Halo is a good looking game. It doesn't try to have the most complex environments with the highest polycount and most dense displacement maps. If you compare a Halo model to a gears model, gears wins, BUT, Halo 3 stands head and shoulders above Gears (and everything I've seen of the CoD4 beta and Killclone 2) in terms of ambient lighting, reflections and effects. It's the subtle stuff like the dust refraction on sandtrap, water or g-d rays in the jungle.

A key thing to remember is that Halo 3 is running at a buttery 60fps whereas Gears is running at 30fps. It's also 16 players versus 8, with vehicles in environments that are typically 3-4 times the size of Gears maps.

Ah yes, but the point I would make is those subtle effects don't stand out as the should in standard definition. To effectively compare two games you should play them as they have been intended to be played.

HALO3 looks stunning. and if you see the scale of the environments you will understand why.

Hey I dont wanna troll, but I gotta admit I love seeing the Hordes of Xfans on here getting there pants/scants in a knot over a simple comment.

Come guys, yes Halo 3 is the best selling blah blah blah, but I honestly feel its due to hype and marketing rather than the merits of the game, deep down inside you know it to, yes even you doobi :D

i never played halo 1 or 2. and i had low expectations of 3. i bought it because alot of okes well be playing it MP. so the fact that it's a decent game is a bonus for me :)

my apologies for comparing gears and Halo

my original point though is that people were slating the halo 3 graphics and saying that they were the same as halo 2.

the is one hell of a difference

even on an sd tv i can tell that

hopefully this clarifies my point

Yeah I actually agree with that. Though with the expectaion level that has been set, I don't think it could live up to the hype no matter how good it is. It's graphics are certainly excellent and way beyond H2. Definitely a worthwhile purchase though. Unless you hate FPS genre or are saving your pennies for the deluge of 360 games which is upon us.

The power Marketing and Hype are amazing. Even managed to get a bunch of guys to Buy a gaming console without any games being available for it, while another console is available at almost half the price wih tons of AAA games available.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

@Iwojima, sure yes, but also no ;) A good developer makes sure it renders well on both. Forza 2 sucked in that regard, it looked as bad as a PS3 game in SD ;) Gears looks great in SD as does Halo 3, but at the same time you can also see how HD would improve some things.

@Abe, yes I'm going to disagree with you there, but only slightly and for a different reason. Halo 3 doesn't have the life changing, ground breaking innovations that Halo:CE or Halo 2 had, although Forge really is awesome. I'm not a Halo fanboy by any stretch of the imagination (I prefer slightly more realistic settings), but it is still an excellent social game.

That's Halo's big hit - "the social", that's where the main market push comes from. Not to be rude but frankly because "everyone can & does play it". 1.9 million preorders are so that people can play with their friends on launch day, not for some new feature.

Even MSNBC have criticized the hype, calling it unnecessary, and I agree. I think MS went overboard, but they wanted to set the record and I guess it did pay off.

If Halo 3 came out now without it's predecessors I agree it may not do nearly as well as it has but then that's the same case with MGS4 and FF13.

I agree that individually the characters don't look as detailed as Gears, but I think it looks better for several reasons:

1 - Framerate - super smooth = happy gamer (not that Gears was bad, Halo is just, better).
2 - Scale - massive levels, huge draw distance (and not the kind of drop off in detail like, for example, Oblivion (which I love too, before I get attacked)).
3 - Massive numbers of enemies and epic battles in said massive levels. There's nothing like storming a bridge with 10 marines and way across the bridge seeing two or three enemy dropships pouring out enemies, with vehicles, air battles overhead, etc. without any slowdown, even in split screen co-op.

I know I sound like a Halo fanboy, and you could say I am, but with good reason. I thought the first Xbox was going to be a sad attempt at a console. Then I saw Halo:CE. The series deserves all the good reviews.
