Hand wax and polish ?

Why do some people leave wax(?) on their car, drive around a while and then wipe it down later? Surely that is not advisable?

There's no real justification for doing so, except perhaps if they had no time to buff off the dried residue.

Well if you drive it around it's bound to gather dust and cause the swirls when you wipe it off, no?
