Hands-on with new web browser Vivaldi

This actually looks rather cool. Will be trying it out.

Why the close buttons on the right hand side? izzat a MAC only browser? Otherwise look ok, will have to test it vs current browsers.

One of its most useful properties is being able to type a single character to specify a site with a search engine, and then typing your query without first having to navigate to that site.

Typing “w List of common misconceptions” will take you to the English Wikipedia, for example.
If I can make the hotkey do a forum search like "site:mybroadband.co.za" that would be really nice.

Tab stacking.I really miss that feature in Opera ever since they changed to the Chromium platform.

I might give this Vivaldi a try then simply for that feature but if its lacking too much else then I'll dump it.

Since I don't have a droid tab no more, I have no use for bookmark syncing. Gonna try this soon.

So Vivaldi = Opera under a new name? They're effectively adding stacked tabs and a few other features to Chromium? Expect others to follow suit based on the uptake of this browser.

I don't think it's based on Chromium. I was avid user of Opera till they switched over to Chromium.

I think this new browser will be refreshing, otherwise Spartan because Chrome sucks RAM like a whore.

Me too! Tab stacking was awesome. Hope they also bring back saved sessions. And and and...

Me:

1. See project
2. Get excited
3. Download
4. "Oh my goodness it supports tab stacking! This is awesome!"
5. Load some sites, browser gets suspiciously sluggish
6. Open up task manager; see several Vivaldi processes, some using 200+MB of RAM
7. "Wait a minute... this is just Chrome with a pretty dress, isn't it? This is just the new Opera all over again"!
8. Go back to using Chrome (if my browser is going to use 4GB RAM, it may as well be out of testing and full-featured)

No wonder my computer feels so slow these days with the new Opera, very different from the old unfortunately.Which current browser is the lightest on RAM but still feature packed/fast and powerful?

I think the old adage, "Fast, Good, Cheap, pick any two" applies here (where "cheap" refers to memory consumption).

In my experience:

Internet Explorer: Fast & Cheap
Firefox: Good & Cheap
Chrome (Opera/Vivaldi to a lesser extent): Fast & Good

EDIT: Opera 9 was all three, in my opinion. Only abandoned it due to security concerns.
