Cape Town - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday wished South Africans a blessed and safe Easter weekend.
"It is that time of the Easter Season where many South Africans visit various places of worship for spiritual rejuvenation and upliftment, while others reunite with families or take a holiday," he said in a statement.
He cautioned those travelling long distances to be careful on the roads, obey the rules, and not drink and drive. He asked people to respect police and traffic officers.
He wished all worshippers a spiritually uplifting Easter and holidaymakers a peaceful, restful, and joyful weekend.
New minister of transport Joe Maswanganyi echoed Zuma's sentiments in a separate statement on Friday.
Maswanganyi, who was sworn in as part of Zuma's new Cabinet on March 31, said South Africa can ensure safer roads and transport industry if all stakeholders came together.
"We owe it to ourselves, our families, our communities and our country to behave in a responsible manner on our roads. We need to do so with the knowledge that our roads are a shared space."
He gave a few tips to commuters this Easter:
-Don’t drink and drive,
-Wear seat belts,
-Don’t text and drive,
-Don’t drink and walk,
-Don’t speed,
-Let us choose life and not death.
