Hi,
i have a 300GB Hitachi drive that i salvaged from a dvd recorder about a year ago.now it was working fine and all up until a few weeks back when it started to pick up some bad sectors. After trying out Partition Magic it clearly stated the drive was Bad and some sectors had issues which the software could repair. Now i could never manage to format it due to these errors but i formatted just now with the Windows boot disc and all seems fine now.In windows it appears as a 300 gb drive and ive tested it by copying some small files across.

Is there any reliable software i can use that can do some deep scanning and give me a report that the drive is actually safe to copy data to. I dont wanna make a huge messup and think its safe when it actually isnt? Any help please

Use it as a store drive for data and make backups, say every 14 days. From what i've seen regarding regenerating bad sectors, it's unreliable & don't even think of installing a OS on it.

This program tests for bad sectors and actually repair them. Unless it's physical bad sectors like scrathes on the platters.
I have repaired my one 80GB more than a year ago it had about 4 bad sectors and have not had a single problem or bad sector with that hard drive since.

The trial version only fixes the 1st sector it finds, so I suggest getting the full version it' only like $40.

This is really a great piece of software

but yeah I agree with the above I also don't trust running my main OS on that drive, I only install my current games I play on that 80GB drive so it' don't clutter up my OS drive. But as I said have not had any troubles with that driver after repairing those sectors.
