Hello chaps :),

So with a 4meg ADSL setup space has now become an issue. I have drives that I purchased way back in 2005 (Seagates). I want to clear them as the data has been mirrored onto my Samsung 1TB. How reliable are these drives, are they worth using as interim storage, in other words seeing as they out of warranty would it be safer to store important stuff on newer drives?

Thank you in advance :)

For really important stuff I use a Raid setup - so if one drive fails I still keep my data.

In general, REALLY important stuff uses only a few megabytes of storage, so a few flashdrives or CD/DVD's should do..

It depends how big your collection is...

Samsungs are very reliable but with any manufacturer there's always that danger of crashes... I've never used a raid setup and don't plan on one either. I have about 10-12TB's of data so if there's a crash I lose everything on that particular drive (happened to a 2TB of mine already and it sucks), so I'm getting more to backup and pack away, that makes more sense then raid to me

Geez whiz and I thought I had a collection. I've got 1 Samsung 1TB & 1 Seagate 1TB and the rest Seagates. So if one of your TB's gets stuffed you lose - no duplicate?

At the moment, yes. Gonna start correcting that though

How do you store your current setup, in any protective case, package or enclosure? That's 12 drives, all with encryption software I hope? Mine are in their respective boxes/packages, I'm also going to invest in one of those dual enclosures.

Since you got this stuff from the internet, I'm pretty sure you will be able to get it again. I'm assuming you have an 4mb uncapped solution. ;) So, the only thing you are really gonna loose, is time to download it again.

Anywho, I have a seagate and samsung 1TB drives as well and I fear my seagate one is the one failing on me. If there is one thing that I have learned, is that it doesn't matter which make hdd you have, anyone of them can/will fail you at some time. No one makes a perfect drive. I just prefer Western Digital, since I have never had one fail on me.

Yep, I agree - pretty much like shooting in the dark with hard drives. Think I'll invest in 2 x 2TB Seagates shortly and get one of those dual external enclosure, proly use the old drives in another PC build.
