Hardcapping of local traffic

Just when the online gaming community was growing, Telkom throws in this curveball.

What do you think is going to happen to online gaming in SA?

i got ISDN thus dont worry. But Telkom is really laying the hand down on a growing ADSL community... sigh... makes me glad i chose an older alternative...
 
I recently upgraded from ISDN to ADSL. If I knew this was going to happen... I wouldnt of made the change.

well, u have a 3gb account just for gaming, it should last the month for source and war3, this per gig billing really sucks thogh, hope ICASA intervenes
 
Thing is, if you are an FPS fan you can use upto 70MB per hour. Last night my brother and I played Unreal Tournament for only 2 hours and we used 120MB.

Many online games are going to die. Look at BF2 for instance. Its a huge bandwidth hog.

Yep, BF2 is the biggest hog i ever played on.

I will sit on the sidelines while i watch the whole ADSL drama unfold and hopefuly when the dust settles will make up my mind next year.
 
Does anyone have the stats on how much counterstrike source uses per hour on ave?
Im getting a 192 connection and would probably play 4hours a day. (not just css, but other games 2)
 
Back to the old trusty 56k for a lot I guess.
 
Apparently the hard cap for local traffic is 60Gb.
This has apparently been confirmed by telskum.

Note, I say "apparently".

For technical reasons I do not belive this is true. They are going to bill the ISPs for the bandwidth used in bulk. They have no way to meter if its local or international.
 
hmmm, if they have no way of determining which is local or international, how did it used to work where you get your 3GB and after that nothing international works, only local?

They put you on a link that has practically no international bandwidth. So, you have a couple of thousand users fighting for an international pipe that is probably a couple of Kb/s wide.

doob: what about the feedback from some of the ISP's proving that SAIX will be charging them more?
 
i hope you are right Killa... but you never know how greedy monopolies can get... specially in SA where consumer rights are pathetic...

I just hope they reconsider. Local traffic for Telkom costs them next to nothing. As it is, we are paying so much for ADSL before we have even considered getting an ISP. For the R90 phone line rental as well as R477 ADSL line rental, you would at least think you would get local traffic for free. I mean, we are funding all their infrastructure upgrades and expansions.

FFS, I hope ICASA tells Telkom to change this before 1 November 2005.

Wishful thinking in my opinion. I've spoken to people working for ISPs and the ISPS are already designing packages and trying to work out ways of negotiating with saix to get better volume discounts on the per gig rate etc.

Fortunately / Unforunately I haven't had time to play BF2 lately anyway...

Per gig billing + a hard cap will force me to play once a week max - I'm not prepared to fork out even more to enjoy gaming.
