This is why you get an HDFury or something of that nature..... strip the HDCP out of the signal.

Well my Logitech Dinovo failed on me this morning. 7 months old, not bad for a R1599 keyboard

It doesn't come with a hard drive:

Ja, the mini's don't tend to come with HDD's.
Still a blerry good price though.
For someone that has an external HDD already, this could be a great solution.

Only issue is no .mkv and H.264 support.

Yeah, for me personally it won't do the job since I've spent the time and effort of getting all my stuff sorted with WMC.... so i'm looking at the different media center extenders out there atm...

would firmware update / custom firmware not be able to sort this out?
read there is a site for custom f/w for this

No, don't think so.

There is another model here, which handles those formats priced at R1399.95.
That's for WDTV though.

There are other options out there that would be cheaper, like Esquire's AC Ryan Media player at R1k ex VAT iirc.

Does it take a the 2.5 drive?

Uses USB input:

WD TV Mini media player is an easy, affordable way to watch digital media on your big screen TV.
Simply plug in WD's My Passport portable hard drive, or similar USB drive, and play movies, music, and photos in a wide variety of file formats, including Real Media (RMVB) format.
There's no limit to the size of your media collection; just add more drives for more movies.
Supports DVD-quality video playback. Also works with most popular USB drives, digital cameras, and camcorders.
