On ears though... :(

For that money you are in Sennheiser HD 518/558 territory. Cancel the B&Ws and get the Sennheisers. Trust me.

My mate has Harmon Kardons like those B&Ws and they're utter crap.

Alright so .... by all means recommend another pair of headphones. I did ask earlier in the thread and people were pointing me to CX 300IIs which are great, but in a completely different class and with no inline controls.

I'm not spending much more than I did for these (R1750) - and I can't see any Senns that come close to this level of quality for that budget. But I don't mind over-ears or in-ears or over-ears, just want best bang for the buck.

As a rule Sennheiser make the best headphones, but you are not seriously comparing Harmon Kardon anything to B&W! (even if they do normally specialise in bigger speakers.)

Speaking of CX 300IIs, I like my R170 Sony MDR-EX100LP in ear earphones more. They don't seem to be available on Takealot anymore though.

For gym and running, I'd say you'd want in-ears like the CX 300-IIs with the stock silicone tips, which really stay in your ears and fit nicely. Unless the action of running causes a lot of distortion from the seal that's been made? I don't run, wouldn't know. Otherwise you may need to look at those 'sporty' in-ears/earphones that have those ear clips?

Please elaborate on this?

Well there are some good in-ears but if you want high calibre ones or Bluetooth you're looking over 2k. I dunno I think the P3s were still a pretty good choice for the price; they should be lightweight enough to run and still give a better sound stage than in-ears.

Well yeah just as I say - for ~r1800 I can't find any better deal. The 558s are like r4k.

I have no working 3.5mm headphones for my phone... all the ones I had got stolen by the previous maid. I keep hovering over these:

Opinions?

I say this as a user who does not like Apple, their headphones are quite awesome. The way they sit in the ear, base, treble etc... Everything is just perfect. My wife uses them when she runs, and she said it's the first pair she had that was perfect in all ways. Well that is the most expensive headphones I have ever used anyways, so I would not know what is better. :D

We could go on for days, but here's my take.

It seems you are wanting 'crossover' headphones for pleasure and for exercising. I don't think this is the right approach, and I think you should rather get cheap in-ears for running, and higher end, over-ear and comfortable headphones for pleasure.

Take a look at both:

The HKs are practically the same in design in terms of shape, how they fit your head, etc. I've used the HKs, and I cannot fathom them being used for running, because I'm convinced they'd fall off. Unless there is some sort of special tight fit? Sounds uncomfortable. I think there's a reason most/all runners use earphones/in-ears and not headphones/over-ears. Unless these are geared towards runners?

Wouldn't they also get sweaty? That B&W material will become manky... In terms of sound quality, I don't think things like soundstage will matter when you're exercising. I think you will find practicality issues with the B&Ws. I also think they're heavily overrated and that you shouldn't be buying into the value proposition in this instance. My recommendation would be CX 300-IIs and HD 518s.

It's very hard to beat Sennheisers HD 5xx for pleasure, PC use, etc. Feels like nothing's on your head, all day. You don't need an amp and the sound quality is so good.

Unless you bring HD 558s in from the States, or buy from a shop that ships. $94 on Amazon.

Are you talking about the Earpods? Yea I had 3 pairs of those that got nicked. I was also quite a fan.

That's kind of what I was hoping for in the first place, to discuss what are the best options for me.

Yeah I don't see how that would work out within my budget but it does sound like the ideal option.

My recommendation would be CX 300-IIs and HD 518s.

To buy new locally that's around R2900 in total. You're a bit woolly on the whole 'budget' thing aren't you?

Yea... well I guess I'm gonna get the headies tomorrow and if all else fails, I'll invest in a pair of earpods or cx 300-IIs or so for the running bit. It's all kind of happened now anyway.

What I would suggest is starting with the CX 300-IIs, and then buying HD 518s when you've saved up enough again. Or, importing HD 558s from the States. It's an effortless process which I've done before. Sennheisers have international warranties too.

I believe in doing things properly, and I want people to be happy, and the B&Ws will just never compare to HD 5xxs. In other words, if you were to try HD 5xxs, I truly believe you would regret your B&W on-ears.

Hm I found a pair of PMX 95s new for R500... Those would be pretty good for working out with I think. Then I guess I can wait to find a higher quality set of on-ears... but my P3s are being delivered tomorrow, will Takealot be okay with me cancelling out now?

Those aren't going to be good either. See the Sennheiser sport 'phones here, they are all in-ears - http://en-us.sennheiser.com/sports-headphones.

You can definitely cancel.

Please no. On-ears are so uncomfortable. Over/around ears is where it's at... Like the HD 5xx.

Guys could you move this convo to a separate thread? This is for bargains and you are going waaaaaaay OT.
@morkhans please assist?
