Noted thanks Zenthrax.

This will be for a home built PC though

Went with a Samsung SSD for my Lenovo Thinkpad.
Good choice, I did the same; can't go wrong with Samsung SSDs.
I had the following SSDs and they all failed at some point: Crucial, Kingston and another name I can't remember...

Wtf do you do to your ssd's or bad luck just run in your family? ;)

Have
2x Corsair SSDs, both still work long time. 1x is 128GB and 1x is 120GB
2x LiteOn SSDs , both still works long time. 1x 128GB and 1x 256GB

Had a 128GB OCZ Vertex 3...probably would still work if I was fried by mistake.

what is a good price for a 1 or 2 TB 2.5inch hdd. I looking to upgrade my laptop hdd as this thing has a 5400rpm drive and it kills me everytime I have to reboot it. can't afford a 1Tb ssd and I need the storage as it is a gaming laptop and don't want to carry a portable drive if I can avoid it.

The speed difference you will get is negligible.

Get a 1TB SSHDD

You may find a bigger boot up performance boost from a clean os install and cutting out ALL non essential apps from the new install.

ahh. well that sucks.
Get a 1TB SSHDD
how much is that? R5k?

might give that a try. bit difficult because I upgraded from win8 to 10. not sure if the laptops recovery will reload 8 and I have to upgrade again.
thanks.

thanks. thought a ssd and sshd were the same thing.

A SSHD only has like 8gb or so of actual SSD and it caches frequently accessed items but falls to normal speed for other things. It is faster than a normal drive but nowhere near as fast as a proper SSD.

I remember when I went from my 500GB SATA3 mechanical drive to my 'fast' OCZ Agility 3. Man, the speeds, the latency, the powaaaaaah! Everything was improved not even tenfold but a hundredfold.

And it wasn't even an expensive drive. I think I paid R599 for it, which works out to ~R10 a GB as it was the 60GB model. In the greater scheme of things it was a terrible drive, with many complaints about firmware wiping the entire drive and the Sandforce controllers packing up for no reason reported by users.

But that said, the improvement it made was definitely worth it and if you can get a decent SSD like the Samsung Evo series you will be very happy for many years to come :)

you can get a drive tray that fits in to your optical drive slot. Place your HDD in there and then place the SSD in the normal HDD slot. Best of both worlds :)
