I caved and ordered one as well to play around with :(

It's the first time I'm ordering from them so I took the tracking and insurance option in case someone at SAPO decides to get an early xmas present.

Total came to R360.

Guys, tracking and insurance is a scam - use PayPal, if it doesn't arrive open a dispute, get your money back, end of.
Tracking number shipping also isn't faster, so zero benefit.

I didn't do tracking and used paypal. Easiest option.

Tracking helps when it gets to SA. Sometimes things get stuck at customs and you don't get the notice or it goes to the wrong Depot etc. 19c for tracking certainly isn't breaking the bank.

+1000. You can't follow up on a package without a tracking number unless you get a really nice person at the post office who is willing to go the extra mile by tracking it via your address or ID number.

... a really nice person at the post office?

LOL - actually a year or three back there was a gentlemen who went the extra mile, cannot remember his name now.

Tracking number won't make it arrive faster or help locating it if it goes missing, you can just see where it is more or less. Last time I paid for a tracking number the number didn't work either...

Tracking or no tracking the timeline to opening a dispute is the same and that is all that matters.

I once got a guy who helped me to track a parcel from HK a few years ago, but I have found that they are usually not interested in doing anything above and beyond. The chap at my local PO is quite friendly and he said that they can check on their system via the recipient address but since it involves typing in an address and not simply scanning a barcode or typing a string of numbers they simply cannot be arsed.

@airborne, the tracking number I found helps if you need to figure out why your package is delayed. It's easier phoning Customs with a tracking number to find out if they are keeping your parcel hostage than phoning them to ask for your parcel based upon your address. They are supposed to send you a notification if you have fees due but I have only once received it. They usually don't bother. Heaven knows why they don't phone you if there is a hold-up as your phone number is usually printed on the parcel waybill anyway...

Your local post office sends the collection notification with duties invoice(if charged) not customs, customs just levies the duties at the intl hub, adds the invoice and sends the parcel on its way.
