Brings up the question, why is local stuff that much more expensive when it's also imported? Local distributors should stop complaining that it's unfair to do comparisons and rather up their game.

Local labour and handling costs, and of course their cut.
SA gov seriously needs to look at it's policy regarding the custom taxes on technology. It's a short sighted view to protect industry but everywhere else in the world the general population have access to cheap tech, leaving SA behind from an innovation point of view.
SA's ability to adopt tech advancements is stunted, which has all kinds of knock on effects that in the end negatively affect consumers. /rant

All countries have those costs. We have little if any import taxes on most electronic goods and the comparative costs include taxes in any case.

My guess is economies of scale. We do not have close to the buying power of India, US or Europe for example. Some disties may need to up margins on certain products in order to survive...

My niece and her boyfriend worked at Matrix Warehouse. The price they would buy stuff at is 54% of the retail price.

Retailers that buy in bulk screw us over and distributors screw over the little guys that used to make IT worthwhile.

I won't be buying expensive hardware from SA.

Amazon: R5800 for gtx 1070 strix
Wootware: R8500

I know you don't get the awesome customer support that wootware has to offer, but those price differences... pretty sexy

The only problem there is warranty. But I guess if 3 items brings a more than 100% saving it's worth taking a risk. Haven't had stuff fail on me yet during product life in any case.

If you use the slow shipping pay the extra little bit for a tracking number, well worth it.

Importing can be a real headache though, just bear it in mind. I bought my 1070 Armor from a guy in Taiwan for I think like R6800, but they charged me R1200 customs and it took a month to arrive. My wife imported some clothing from a lady in the US for around $250 and got charged R1600 a couple weeks back after 6 weeks of shipping. It's not something I'll do easily again.
