I googled around the issue and read a comment where someone actually opened it up and saw that the battery was perfectly fine. Apparently the issue was with soldering and the connections around it.

Now we are talking. Just need to figure out how to open it. It looks pretty flimsy.

Looking for a budget sub R1000 phone, perhaps something like Samsung Z2. Any good (no contract) deals abound?

Check out the STK ones at Hyper Checkers. Good specs for the price.

Haven't used one myself but the specs and size seems better than the J1. The Z2 is just horrible. No Android.

I got the J1 2016 edition. the J1 mini is just a smaller version.

Really impressed with it. The performance isn't top notch. But for whatsapp, youtube, and occasional browsing, its smooth. Also it got Amoled screen and the colors are sharp enough to cut through butter.

Edit: The J1 has the AMOLED screen. Don't think the mini has it.

Thoughts on the Vodacom Kicka 2 and Smart mini? I should add that is for a senior citizen, ease of use is key not features.

Kicka 1 sucks, especially for an old person. The screen is so small you can only see like 2 lines or something once the keyboard pops up. I don't know how the Kicka 2 compares.

Kicka screen is too small for a touchscreen device. The last phone I recommended to a senior citizen was the Redmi 2 Pro. It's now been replaced by the Redmi 4A.

You can pickup 2hnd Galaxy S4's for R1000 these days, that's a potent phone and very well specced, may just need a new battery. Enormously better than a brand new budget phone.

I recently purchased a cheap Uhans A101 5.0" 720p LTE phone from Aliexpress for ~$55 (using the Aliexpress coupon for first time purchases on the app). I have been very impressed with it so far - >600 reviews in Feedback tab in the link below. None of the phones that are available locally in this price range seem to offer nearly as much value.

If you can increase your budget to ~$125, the latest Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X (Snapdragon 625) is considered to be one of the best Chinese cell phone buys of 2017. After seeing all the positive YouTube reviews I am very tempted to purchase one myself.
