Hope someone can help,

I recently got a "oldish" Maxtor 6E040L0 drive from a buddy. I thought it would be a great idea to install it as a slave drive for a back-up drive for music, personal docs etc. Installed it but there is a snag. I can't see it!! It is there, "my computer" just don't show it. My HDD Health program can see it, can get all the drive info, monitor it etc. My "device manager" sees it although it can't seem to "populate" the data every time.

Yet it is gone!!! BTW. the drive was in my buddy's PC as a slave drive and worked a charm.
My OS is XP Prof.

Any ideas???

right click My Computer
select Manage
in the Computer Management window,
select Disk Management

You might see your drive there and/or the partition, if there's no partition allocated, format and create an NTFS partition. (do a full format, not a quick one)

If there is a poartition you may have to import it or activate it there.

I'm assuming yuo can see the hard drive in the BIOS.

Hi Syndyre,

I am not sure. Anyway that I can check that? I previously installed it as the Primary Master to see whether I could install XP on it. It done all the checks, formatted but when it started to install it said that setup could not access the disk. I then checked it with some software from (it think) Saviour Disk Recovery. This found a fault and repaired it. But still no-go.

So not sure how to check whether it has a partition?
