lock your PC (either with windows, or with BIOS)
also enable password on screensaver, that way if you quickly dash off (loo, phone, pizza delivery, fell out of window) then the freaks will still be unable to surf the midget german nazi porn

apart from that, just dont let them near your stuff by locking your room or something

The primary reason for using a hardware based keylogger is to record passwords entered before a software based keylogger can be started.
You can build one with some basic knowledge of electronics, but I'll leave you to find out how for yourself.

Or to avoid detection. (Software spyware is incredibly easy to detecty)

Or to be compliment with XYZ operating system (that you are not familiar with).
