I am looking into doing a computer upgrade for my son who primarily uses his computer for gaming. Currently I have the following in mind:

MB - Asus A8NE (don't know if sli is justified?) = R1129
CPU - AMD 3500+ = R1499
RAM - 2 * Corsair 1GB DDR400 = R1800
Graphics - Gainword 7800GT 256MB = R3400
Harddisk - Hitachi 250GB SATA2 = R960
(Total approx R9500)

Any suggestions or comments would be very welcome

Hey,looks good to me Mike.Either way thats gonna do pretty darn nice for the latest games.
2 1gb sticks is the way to go....Corsair is nice nice.
To get real picky-you could go for the venice 3200,bit cheaper and performance is pretty much the same,OR,you could go with the 3800 which will have the 1mb l2 cache....Depends what your cash flow is :)
Looks like your son will be more than happy.

thats alot of money ur gonna be coughing up dude

Very true:o

It is a result of an idle promise made if he and his brother achieve results on their rapports due tomorrow that I thought could not be done:confused:

I suspect they have proven me wrong:)

Hey I don't know were you got those prices from, but they are very good. If they are dealers prices you need to add 14% VAT to them.

Otherwise I think a DFI lanparty board with SLi would be better. DFI LanParty UT NF4 SLI-D

:) More like 90% avg each - now you know why I am confused - they seem to want it a lot.

Not dealer prices but available on the internet including VAT:cool:

Thanks for the comments guys

Does anyone think it is worth rather getting an sli mb for possible future upgrades?

The DFI board is R300 more - I think its worth it.

What grade your kids in ? Boy is the 1 going to be pissed if the other only got 88% or something.

Well...
IMHO to look at it from this upgrades point of view:
You're getting a 7800gt,7800's were this years top of the range....the next gen(besides the 512mb 7800s)will only be coming like a year from now, they will cost an arm and a leg for sure and will only drop reasonably in like a year and a half to 2 years....If your sons starts to crave a performance increase which no doubt newer games to come will require for full higher AA detail settings or whatever then if you put another 7800gt together with that one youre gonna handle everything just fine,or close enough to fine.
So in a nutshell SLI is kind of like future proofing your PC for further upgrades and heavier demanding games.
Like I said though, that setup already would make many a person very very happy .
:)

My bet is the grade 10 kid is the one that misses it, i got the worst results in that grade. Missed an B overall by 5 marks - had a look at my report to find that BTW.

Person the DFI Lanparty also looks very nice (R1499)

Comments on the Asus A8N-SLI Premium at R1650

From word of mouth...Asus is the more stable of the 2....
However theyre both great,good stuff.
Edit:I wouldnt wanna debate right now!hehe
Edit2:BTW Mike, the power supply should not be overlooked, they are often the cause of instability.

yay another E-mail box to flood... Its best if you edit it like i did, because there are programs that scan sites looking for E-mail addresses to flood.
