Has my clutch gone?

VW Velociti 1.4i, 2005 model, 75 000KM on the clock, all driven by me.

So I take her in for a service - service goes well but as I drive the car away I notice that the gears feel very different. Then, as time passes, I find I cannot get it into 1st or reverse sometimes and there is a strange clunking noise when I put the car into gear...

Take it back to garage who tell me that clutch has gone. And it will cost 3000-4000 to repair. They show me the clutch pedal which is laying low to the ground of the car and not being depressed enough when it is engaged. Apparently to ratchet it up or down any more would cause the gears to slip...And all that can be done is to replace the clutch. I am no mechanic so I am not sure of the details but mention was made of the clutch plate and something which sounded like a firewall which needed to be replaced.

I am getting a detailed quote tomorrow so I can see exactly what they reckon needs to be replaced.

Based on this scant information, does it sound to you guys as if the clutch needs to be replaced and is R3000-R4000 the kind of ballpark figure I should be looking at?

hmmm, I don't know about the clutch officially being gone (that would mean you will struggle to select the gears like badly, they won't want to slip into place), however, I think the clutch is well worn out. I suggest you fork out the money to replace. and that's not a bad price for a clutch, I paid around R3000 for my polo 1.4i's clutch to be replaced.

Put it in 4th and try accelerate while already rolling forward - see if it slips (rev's go to full throttle, car doesn't accelerate properly).

Just enough so your not stalling the car - if you're going to fast and its engaging properly, it defeats the purpose...
 
Quick test to check the clutch - get on your favourite highway and accelerate hard from 100km/h to 120km/h in 5th gear. If the revs increase but the speed doesn't, it's definitely your clutch plate. The figure you have been quoted is acceptable. The kit alone is about R800 (R1400 if you buy it from VW, IIRC), with labour making up the rest of the bill.

Under bonnet? That sounds suspect, can you see the clutch cable from the bonnet?
 
A clutch should last up to 400000kms. 75000kms is too low for a clutch to be gone.

Unless you were riding the clutch (foot on clutch pedal) the whole time - this will cause clutch slip and wear it out quicker.
 
Its a cable cluth well then it should not be so much rather contact any Goldwagen shop they sell it and will also be able to fit it, normally much cheaper than VW and also owned mostly by guys who worked for VW...........I think a cable should be round about R450 max............
 
I can assure you its the clutch cable that wasn't tight enough, so it got a bit loose. They need to change the tension on the cable, then your issue will be resolved. I had the exact same issue than you, but mine happened after 150 000km's.
 
I think its the clutch cable...i had a similiar issue once.
The stealership is just trying to make money. Get a second opinion.
