Has the iPhone4 signal problem been sorted out?

Without the use of a case that is? Tried Googling but can't find anything more recent than July.

you cant find anything recent coz there really isnt a problem with it --- i think it was over hyped by the apple haters!!!

just hold the phone with your hands and not your feet and you will be fine

Never had the problem since the day I got mine. In fact, reception is generally better than on my 3G, no matter which way I hold it.

If you mean they fiddled with the code that determines how many bars are displayed, yet it's been sorted. Personally I call BS but hey the Apple has spoken.

Due to the antenna being on the outside, signal dBm and SNR have been improved to a level above that of the 3G and 3GS, - so if you happen to do a death grip on the iPhone, then it will reduce your signal to the same level as what you would have with an iPhone 3G or 3GS. In other words, you are not likely to drop anymore calls than what you would on an iPhone 3GS - even if you are giving it a death grip. If you hold it normally, you will have better RX sensitivity, and in fact are more likely to drop a call on the older iPhone first.

Crunch the iPhone 4 like you are throttling a python = same signal level (dBm) and SNR as an iPhone 3G (held lightly/normally)
Hold the iPhone 4 lightly (in a normal fashion) = better signals than a iPhone 3G (held lightly/normally)

all phones do it, the iPhone 4 doing it was just the first people took notice, and it got blown out of proportion
(probably because there was a strange software bug, that caused people to take notice)

Nokia's, Blackberry's and semens do it too.

It's probably just garbage, though.

After taking apart a couple of phones, I've seen that the majority of them have the antenna either embedded in the pc board or have metal plate that does not make contact with the body. I'd love to see how Apple have laid it out.

So what caused the consumerist to not recommend it?

Short Answer - No. If you hold it a particular way, it will drop. You can put the phone into field test mode - *3001#12345#* "call" and try holding it different ways and you can see how the signal is effected. If you are really persistent, you will be able to get it to drop a call. For the most part though, its not a problem and you will be able to live with it. It only really becomes a problem when signal strength is poor already.

Haven't had a glitch at all using the iphone4 - tried really hard to replicate the deathgrip - best i could do was get it to drop a couple of bars when covering it with both hands.

Well got mine last week...I could do just about anything but could not make out going calls, called MTN on several occasion to try and fix the issue still nothing happened. Till today for some reason I now can make my calls only if I hold it a certain way.

Could I be the only one who experiencing lssues with the anthena problem?

I've been able to replicate the antenna issue, but only if i really try to. I actually felt like I had achieved something when I managed to get it to "Search" for reception. I have theories relating to why this happens only in certain circumstances, e.g. conductivity of your skin, type of signal present etc. But they're just simple theories, and I'm not going to try and make it sound like I know what I'm talking about.

I feel that everybody still has the potential to experience this issue. It doesn't seem to be a problem in places with 3G reception though. As for your specific issue though, I don't think it's related to Antennagate. The signal drops over 20 - 30 seconds once you hold the phone. The position you need to hold it in to drop signal is only really likely to happen when you're playing/looking at the phone (upright, not landscape), is probably only experienced by right-handed people, and not when you're talking. (this statement is based on a phone holding position where the phone is held between thumb and middle finger, with the index finger pressed into the centre of the back of the phone).

I shouldn't imagine this is much help to you though, now that I've written it...
