Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger is convinced that Theo Walcott can go on to become a better player than Barcelona's Argentine prodigy Lionel Messi.

“He’s different [to Messi at that age] and I think he’s more,” Wenger said at a press conference on Friday.

“If you have to look for a weakness in Messi you would say it is his ability to run without the ball, behind the defender.

“When he takes the ball to his feet he’s like a Ferrari. But Theo is more a guy who has the timing to run off the ball and that is something that is difficult to find.

“We had Marc Overmars who was especially good at that and I’m a great, great lover of movement off the ball.”

Wenger went on to credit Walcott's rapid development to a weight training regime they put him on since he first arrived as a very scrawny 16-year-old.

"He is a man now in the fight," he said. "You feel he has much more power than a year ago, or six months ago.

"We do a bit of strengthening of the upper body but not weights, because I believe in football it's more about coordination.

"Weights make you more rigid and coordination makes you more flexbile and Walcott is a guy who has natural power. He will naturally become a strong upper body player."

Messi is a class player with lots of potential but drifts in and out of matches. I'm a 'Pool supporter, so I have no love for Ronaldo.

Walcott is a good player, especially as a impact player off the bench. But alluding he's an all-time great is way too early.

haha, yeah nivek... these fools. Anyways the answer to this thread is NO, wenger has not lost his mind. I have been an Arsenal fan, and everytime i hear someone doubt him he proves them wrong!! Example, who is this thierry henry charchter that he has signed, all he does is run fast ( sorta sounds like these walcott comments we are getting).... And the people that doubted him for getting Adebayor? They were proven wrong as well, i must admit i was one of them, but wenger knows the game better than anyone out there... so NO he has not lost his mind, and just watch theo outplay messi in the 2010 worldcup.

Messi was the reason they made it to the final. He was the sole weapon to tear Chelsea apart giving Barca the win. I know, i have it on dvd and watch it every so now and then.

You can clearly see from my post's that I don't ascribe to the idea that Messi or Walcott has made it.

They good players in their own right, who are key players for their clubs.

You earn superstar status IMO. It's not a divine right.

As an example, look how Ronaldinho fell by the wayside due to off the pitch disctractions. Hopefully he gets his focus back at AC Milan

World class has become a cliche in my opinion, and the title is bestowed on a player way too quickly.
