Has Wenger lost his mind?

@ maestro - Messi has earned super star status!

Being described by most as the best player on the planet, coming runner up for FIFA world player of the year at aged 19.

He has been called a superstar seasons ago already. I take it you do not watch La Liga.

Not as often as I would like. Fair enough, Messi is a world class player.

In terms of World Player of the Year, well that's allot of politics. It holds no credance with me anymore.

There are only a few players in the top bracket in any case.

Im 100% sure now u dont watch La Liga. Messi has dominated La Liga for the past 2 and a half seasons. He is the most highly rated player in the league and the world.

How can you say he has not been performing often enough? Take the world player of the year award away - he is still the most talented and consistant player over the past 3 seasons.

Injury is the only concern, hnce him missing a big chunk of the season.

I might not watch much La Liga (the odd Valencia match as I'm a David Villa fan) but I watch most of Argentina's internationals. Massive Argentine fan :D

It hasn't helped that Barca weren't competitive in the championship last season and that he's struggled to keep fit this term.

See why I say the World Player title is a farce? If he's so good, why haven't they given him the award yet? Politics!

I must admit that he played well in the Olympic tournament.

Just like the Champions League prizes going to Chelsea players this year. Man Utd won it but only have Ronaldo to show in terms of awards. Load of crap!

Well well well, all u Walcott haters, how was that goal ? Behind him, awkward height, awkward angle, and he still put it in !!

I didn't see Walcott's goal, but Ramsey got a cracker! ;)

walcott cant shoot or cross remember, mustve been a fluke :D

I think some1 needs to recheck their definition of straight. With regards to skill, i think walcott is still not as good a messi, but he will get there. With regards to this question in this thread, the answer is still NO. Wenger has made good points on why he thinks walcott is better than messi was, and i agree. With regards to greatest player in last season, it was no doubt, none other than the Cry baby himself (cristiano ronaldo) and maybe David Villa is up there, but theres no way messi gets that award!!

@ phiber - do you watch La Liga?

You probably reckon David Villa cos of the recent Euro champs :D

That goal from Wallcot, he ran straight with speed - no real skill just speed.

MESSI DRIBBLED through the team to SCORE!!!! That goal was rated as the best goal in football history just like Marodona.

If you are not capable of noticing the amount of skill it takes to score that goal, then what are you doing in the soccer section?

The fact that walcott has speed and can control the ball is his skill set. It is nowhere near the best goal in football history, not even top 10. I dont doubt Messi is good, and i dont doubt he is better than walcott, but what i'm saying is that WENGER is not wrong in saying that walcott is as good as Messi was at that age, if not better. Remember it doesn't take 1 run to make a player, it takes consistency, and the ability to perform when your team requires it. Walcott has shown that this season. You want to see great dribbles through the entire team? Theres one by Giggs that pops to mind, that was better than that. Even the one by Kanu.

With regards to best players, Messi's consistency has yet to come through, and yes a lot of that was down to the old coach, maybe Pep Gaurdiola can show him a thing or 2.

Actually that goal was voted as one of the top goals in history, in the english press.

Also you have to remember that 1 goal was just the cherry on the cake of a lot of of ther great performances by him eg. hatrick against real madrid. You also have to remember he was wallcott's age when he done these amazing feats and wallcott could never emulate it.

What are you talking about consistancy?

When Messi was Wallcots age he won a Champions League and back to back league titles!!!

He was one of the main reasons why Barca won those titles.

Giggs's goal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3iqTTAEJbQA

Hardly can be compared to Messi's.

Have another look.

Theo Wallcot has absolutely no edge over Messi. Any football loving person would agree with this.

The day Theo Wallcot scores a hat trick against a team with the quality of Real Madrid, its that day i will stop and pay attention to him. I wont hold my breath, he isnt even guarenteed a starting spot for England or Arsenal.

Walcott just scored a hat-trick for england. Now for an Englishman that is one of the highlights of your career. Find me something official that shows that Messi goal as "one of the top goals in history".

No doubt a hattrick vs madrid is impressive, but to be world class, and now im really talking world class ( like zizu, pele, maradona and the like) he would have won barcelona that game, not just got them a draw. And i only bring this up because there is alot of "world class" thrown around when it comes to messi, and he is good enough to get there, but he is not yet world class.

Bust still sticking to the topic of this thread, Wenger has not LOST his mind, and im surprised no one wants to comment about that!

Wallcot scored a hat trick against a 10 man out of sort Croatian team. Woooo Wooooo

Ya, you right, that is AMAZING!

Its funny, how the names you mention all have said that Messi is world class. Hell, even Deco who plays along side Ronaldo in the Portugal team has said that Messi is the best player on the planet.

...but i wont expect you to know, based on your comments in the other thread when you posted that Messi is fighting for his spot in the Barca line up.

That proves that you not clued up enought to be taken seriously ;)

Wallcotts hat-trick was against a 10 man croatia...messi's hat-trick against madrid was for a 10 man barca!

The times reporting on messi's goal:

It was a goal that had commentators screaming and shouting, dragging out the cry of Gol! until their breath could hold no more, a strike that caused websites to crash and dominated television screens, a work of art that had journalists running out of superlatives. One newspaper incredulously posed the same question famously asked of Diego Maradona back in 1986: "What planet did you come from
