This is an example of hate speech I came across online this morning:
I feel I have to expose it.

Whites have been far too quiet and polite in letting others spew hatred and racist remarks towards them.
Far too many individuals are walking around with thoughts of white genocide, this time I made a copy so I can show you.

We have to object, we can no longer stand by in sympathy of others inabilities while they rile up others to kill us, to drive us from our jobs and homes.

This has to be stopped.

Ok, for the dumb a$$es who will automatically assume he's calling for white people to be murdered, he's actually saying that only white people are racist i.e. the only way to get rid of racism would be to kill the racist whites. I realise that is a stupid and ironically racist thing to say, but lets discuss it in that light please. I can see this going to 3 or 4 pages of stupid in a matter of minutes.

so if I say kill all the racist blacks that's OK? he is a racist and that is hate speech whichever way you want to look at it :mad: also how do you know? can you read his mind?

'to kill a material number of whites'
he did not say 'to kill a material number of racist whites'

How do you know that this man did not mean what he said.

Case in point. He didn't say kill all racist whites, so your question is a non sequitur. You'd have to be able to read his mind to assume that he wants to kill white people or is suggesting they should be.

You mean how do I know he didn't mean what you assume.

He didn't say kill all white people. The implication is kill enough white people so that there is no more racism i.e kill racist white people. If he meant kill the people who are the object of racism he would have to had said kill all the people who are the object of racism i.e. all white people.

Suggesting killing them is a piss poor way to make that point, especially in our country's charged racial atmosphere.

There is no way you can know what he meant. I can only react to what he actually said. This man is a public speaker, I hold him accountable for what he said and what he said is a very threatening. What he said is stupid and hateful and I object.

I meant that if you are correct in your assessment of his meaning and intention behind the comment (which you cannot be certain of), it's a stupidly polemic way of making that point, but that goes without saying obviously.
 
Pathetic I hope Zille takes him to task. He should know better if he didn't mean it but it would just be easier to say what he meant in the first place. My bet is he said exactly what he meant

You take responsibility for the words you utter.
You think before you speak.
You do not promote the killing of another race in any way whatsoever - it is called hate speech and it is outlawed.

No more excuses.
You take responsibility.

What comes from the mouth, came from the mind: formulated in the mind : killing whites will solve the racist issue .The mind that looks for solutions to problems through murder.

The mind that entertains thoughts of killing to solve problems.
The mind exposes itself.

I can use a bit of logic to try and deduce what he meant. I haven't seen any logical counter argument. If we're just going take what he said on face value there is no real discussion here is there, except whether using the words kill, white and people in the same sentence amounts to hate speech in and of itself.

The fact is he didn't say a material amount of white people should be killed and I've given someone logical reasons to believe that he meant that racism is exclusive to white people.

I certainly don't have any reason to defend a black racist (which is what he is in any case) except for the sake of trying to avoid, knee jerk, disproportionate and inaccurate responses.

I didn't really think it would work.
 
Fair enough, you and I do not follow the same reasoning when interpreting this hate speech.

You reason that he meant something else than what he stated.
You also reason that you know how he reasoned.
I reason he means what he says, and he says what he means.
I reason I can only react to what he said, as I cannot read his mind.

So if I said: : "The only way to end racism is to kill a material number of blacks" would this be considered hate speech, a call to genocide, racism or a return to the Apartheid days?
