I'm not in a position to spend too much on PCs right now...the bulk of this is insurance money, so spending retail on non-Rectron PSUs is a slight problem...

Can anyone else confirm nGAGE's comment on the Aopen PSUs?

I could stretch for the 700w, but is it worth it?

Whats the deal with DX 10 cards as well? You should try go for a directx10 card as It seems the DX 9 cards will underperform in the near future...so try avoid nvidia 7 series as they are all DX 9 cards as far as I know :) eish I havent been gaming for a while so Im not as clued up as before :p
 
DX 10 will only be commonplace like mid this year or so, remember, the software takes a while to catch up with hardware trends.

In any case, Nvidia will be releasing the mid range G80 cards soon.

I've removed the tuner card, and added the 700w supply.

PCs are not my priority, and as long as I can run the modern games decently I'm happy.

I can think of better ways to spend the small fortunes required for gfx cards. :)

Btw, what is a "dual rail" PSU?

You'll be fine with an Aopen man, I just (wrongly) assumed you were going to be putting in a hefty GPU at first.

My fiance's box is my previous machine (AMD 3400+ 1gb ram, 6800GT, 2x HDD's, 1x DVD) and a Aopen 450W psu, you'll be fine with the Aopen 500 :)

Well, I have no idea what will happen down the line, and seeing as how I'll be running everything your fiance runs, in addition to some other kit, and ultimately a TV card - I'll stick with the 700w.

Futureproofing - to a degree. ;)

Dual rail is basically two 12V (if I recall) outputs that are seperate from each other.

usually for high end gaming rigs when you want to seperate the load, ie: have hard drives, dvd on one rail and GPU on the other.

The idea is that, if you're playing Oblivion, or some rather hectic game, your GPU is going to be pulling alot of current, and if your hard drive starts pulling alot, you'll get dips/spikes, which can cause stuff to crash/artifacts etc;

Go with the 500W, it will handle your rig just fine.

I might be seriously mistaken, but I think shockG broke some recond with a computer that has a Aopen PSU. :cool:

The cheapest DX10 card is bout R4500, so it's a bit on the expensive side :rolleyes:

Besides, he already has a 7600GT

As you've been told, the E6300 can be overclocked to an E6600, but what they haven't told you is that the much cheaper DDR2-667 RAM does do 800MHz at 5-5-5-15 1.9V, so you will have R800 left to get a very nice TV tuner card. ;)

Regarding the power supply: 450W will be more than enough. I used a power supply calculator to calculate my needs (running this system with a 7600GT, X-Fi sound card, TV tuner and 4 USB powered HDDs, and it worked out on 359W).

You obviously do not overclock :)

Your power supply at 80% efficiency suddenly only runs at only 360W (lucky if Aopen comes close to 80% for long) any slight change in power and your system is fried.

Aopen only says "High efficiency" where all decent international brands give a percentage even if only 80%, so i am being kind giving Aopen 80% :p

Keyboard: HP somethingorother, (It's black and silver and has no irritating power/multimedia keys) and is nice to touchtype on.
Mouse pad: Thermaltake Tai Chi (really nice for gaming + easy to clean)

That's pretty much it. Not all the parts were bought at the same time (but most of them are) and I was fortunate enough to not have to pay VAT on the components, don't worry, it's legal :)

Music production and gaming are my main hobbies and sometimes digital art, so this is where I spend most of my money.
