Hi all,

My PC was recently fried by Lightning, and insurance has now paid out...

I have about 7k to play with, which could be stretched a little if needs be...

The only parts that survived the strike are my PCI Express 256 7600 GT gfx card, and my case. I have a new optical drive.

We're just talking about the box here...

My company is able to source me parts at Rectron reseller prices.

What I had:

SLI 939 MoBo with DDR 400 1 Gb RAM...onboard sound, 450w power, 250 Gb S-ATA HDD, AMD 3200 dual-processor 4 Ghz CPU...

Obviously I want something atleast comparable, preferably better...

AM2...atleast 250 Gb HDD [fast access], 2 Gb DDR 2...perhaps 3800 CPU or better...

I'm preferable to AMD, but am told Intel's at the moment are better...

...so the question is; what do you all recommend from the Rectron pricelist?

If I happen to save some cash, even better. My old drive needs recovery. ;)

I've been out of the PC world for some time, and bought the last PC on recommendation too, so any advice would be most welcome.

Why would you ever go with AMD? Go with Intel Duo Core, in my opinion nothing beats it. But then again, thats just my opinion.;) Try and get a Quad Core Gigabyte Motherboard if ur budget allows it.
 
I am parcial to the Intel Core 2 Duo's nowadays. They perform excellently.

OK, so now I'm leaning towards Intel...

What do you guys recommend full setup-wise?

Power; MoBo; RAM; CPU; HDD

Budget is approx. 7k, and a TV card in there, spec-permitting would be great. ;)

I have to agree, go with an Intel Core 2 Duo, the E6300 can be clocked up to an E6600 quite easily.

Rectron stock the Gigabyte 965-DS3 or whatever its called, I can't recall offhand, good board from what I hear and I think it also carries a 5yr warranty.

The Transcend DDR2 800 is good ram for the Core 2 Duo, they have that too.

i have that extact setup and my cpu is running 3.22ghz

1800 cpu
1500 mobo
1000 ram
1900 vga card 7900gs is must :)
 
Yep, once I've got my cooling setup properly I may OC my E6600 .. but at the moment I'm very happy with it, Oblivion at 1280x1024 max detail, 16AF, 16AA and it runs smooth.

Here's what I'm looking at going with...I downgraded the MoBo one level, as it's only one extra PCI port, but I get RAID which I want. :)

If I were you I'd downgrade the CPU a little/or spend more money on a quality PSU, if you're planning on running a bunch of drives and a beefy GFX card, you're going to want a better quality PSU.

PSU's are probably the most frequently underlooked component in PC building.

an Aopen PSU might be fine for a general usage PC, but if you plan on sticking in a high end GPU and playing some serious games, you may find a cheap PSU being the cause of problems.
 
The techies at work are going to set me up with RAID. :)
I'm sick of losing data over stupid things. ;)

My gfx card is a 7600GT...

The only other larger PSU listed by Rectron is the Aopen 700w?

I would have thought that overkill...? *checks prices...but may have to drop the tuner card in favour...*

It would seem we have a 50/50 over the MoBo...anyone else able to pitch in an opinion for me?

500w should be fine for your rig, it's not just the 'size' it's the brand. I guess for your graphics card you should be OK, but if you plan on upgrading to a 7900 series or better, you may find it problematic. I guess I'm probably being too pedantic on this topic, I work with PCs every day and I've seen so many motherboards and drives pop and usually, the one thing I've noticed is the PSU has blown or is not supplying the correct amount of current, thus damaging hardware.

You mentioned losing data, then go for a surge protector on your electrical mains and on your phone/tv antenna (if it's on the roof) and you should be set :D

Yeah, they're not bad, but not amazing. For desktops Ok, but when I built my rig and spent nearly R20k on a rig, I wasn't going to miss treat it by sticking in a less than superb quality PSU.

But, I'm just a pedantic SOB when it comes to hardware indeed anything that is a long term investment and worth a lot of dough/blood/sweat/tears.
