Have an escape plan? Think again.

I'm already a US/UK citizen/property owner so asylum isn't the issue. My kids have dual nationality (with the availability of a third) so they're taken care of too. The missus only has SA citizenship but given the above I'm not going to have much of a problem.

Ye you wont have much problem at all with that. I need to go now because my kids wont be eligible for UK citizenship. As I got mine through ancestry. I need to have my kids there to make sure they have the UK Citizenship. Its not something I will overlook considering their future oportunities. I want them to have the most broad set of oportunities available to them with as little trouble as possible.

Its just the uk thats full of it. My wife is a portuguese citezin, and when everything is in order (still busy sorting all of that) then I will be able to go to portugal without a visa as long as I'm traveling with her.

Ye they kinda have to be when you compare the UK to Portugal. No offense meant, but Portugal is not exactly an overly desirable country to immigrate to, thus they do not need strict immigration laws to keep the Polish, Pakistani and Indians from flooding in. I dont blame them for having strict laws, I do blame them for not making sure that the UK visa Border Agency website is up to date and fully informative and easy to navigate. Also that getting them on the phone is as hard as scratching your ass crack with your elbow.

If the SHTF I'd head to Asia, I've spent a lot of time there anyway and enjoy living there.

What degree of SHTF are we talking about here? Egyptian-style rioting? Libyan civil war? Zimbo land-grabbing? something less extreme than these scenarios?

Hahaha,

if you did get them on the phone as ALL the call centre agents do is tell you to go to their site. Then tell you to click on whatever tab they think you need.

I called them & waaaaaaaaaaaaited til I spoke to someone regarding a UK visa App & that's what they did. When i asked them about something that was very UNCLEAR the guy told me that he can't help me as he's not been trained on it all & that i need to figure it out & decide for myself....
Apparently they only get trained to refer people to their site :mad:

Grrrr!!!! :)

How do we know when the SHTF? Aren't we already there? Crime out of control, healthcare is useless, corrupt gov't, education system failing.

When its cheaper to use money than toilet paper is that when the SHTF? :)
Private healthcare is great!! Expensive...but great!

@Greg and Trapjaw
SHtF is literally a subjective thing. I may view SHtF as lybian riots, or Zimbabwe. Someone else might consider the current state a SHtF state of affairs.

Personally it has hit the fan for me. Simply because I want to offer my children a safer environment, filled with less restrictive oportunities, to live in. The crime and failing education here is a big thing for me. Pulling up to your gate and constantly looking over your shoulder is not fun at all. Taking off all jewelery to go for a stroll around the neighbourhood, just to be on the safe side, is a little extreme. It is still realistic though, you need to constantly remove the invitation of opportunity from the criminals. Yes its about being streetsmart, there are different levels of it, depending on where you live. But there is nowhere in this country where you can feel 100% secure enough to leave your keys in the car outside and quickly run into the house to grab something that you forgot.

Its all a personal and subjective matter. Some people will wait for riots and civil unrest before they feel the need to move. Others will board up their houses and sit inside with guns while the country falls appart around them, defending what "Is theirs".
I dont wish for that to happen, I am not even sure it will. Even if the current state of affairs was the worst the country would ever get (Which I do doubt), its not at a level high enough, for me to raise my children and honestly say that I have given them the best oportunity and life that I could. I would never forgive myself if my children were not able to follow their dreams, because I was too scared to take a leap of faith. If it works out there, awesome, if it doesn't and I am forced to come back here, then at least I tried. At least my conscience would be clear.
I dont think I could live with myself if I stayed here and never took the chance, then something negative were to happen to my family. I would constantly live with the guilt of "What if" questions running through my head.

But that is my personal motivation. Some is bad from this country, others are good from the UK. I would not say that I am leaving this country, sure of the fact that it will fall into chaos. I want it to succeed. If it does, it will only succeed in many many decades though. To come out of the hole it is digging right now, will take too long. My family does not have the time to wait out of some missplaced sense of "home" or "loyalty" or "pride".

@unskinnybob
Guns a blazing is a nice sentiment. If you are alone and have no-one else to look after that relies on you. If I was mugged alone, I might fight, I might not. If I was mugged with my wife at my side, I would do everything I could to ensure that she stayed safe. First not putting up a fight to incite violence in the criminal. If it can happen peacefully I will leave it be and let him take my stuff. Fighting could result in you being whooped and your wife suffering for your pride. When you have to think of more than just yourself, your ideals and your priorities change some. Saying that you will stay and fight rather than run is a very selfish statement if you have family with you that cannot fend for themselves. What if your fighting fails and you are not able to protect them?
Then again, you might actually go for the safest option and not ever put yourself in a situation where you know you will end up being mugged, if you see it coming, you will move to the other side of the road or whatever. Avoidance is far safer than intervention. I am choosing to remove my family from the situation that I feel is less ideal.

Buy a yacht guys. Prepare it with food and supplies. If the **** hits the fan - they will close air traffic.

Sail away

And this is the undeniable truth. Every question you asked is answered with either a referal to their website or a vague, "Well its entirely up to you sir" statement. Bunch of morons. Even emailing their enquiries @ blah blah . gov . uk address is met with a generic response about websites etc...

I even asked a simple question. Do they require an un-abridged marriage certificate or will an abridged one suffice? SA issues the abridged (Shortened) certificate as the standard issue. UK issues an un-abridged (Full) certificate as their standard issue. So I wanted to know if I have to pay someone at home affairs to expedite the application and issuing of a full certificate. They couldn't even tell me that. Bunch of morons. haha.

The do have a complicated system when it comes to ancestry. My mother is British and through that I was eligible for citizenship, which as you've gathered does not give your kids an automatic right to citizenship. By the time I was ready to apply for mine I had been living in the UK for long enough that I was automatically eligible and that can be passed down.

And to get it can take up to 4 months. The same for unabridged birth certificates.

I would recommend anyone to get these documents in any case. Even if you don't want to emigrate, or otherwise leave the country now.

You need the unabridged versions of the marrige & birth certificates when applying to go over. Or at least that's what my folks needed when they went. My step-dad is from there & my Mom from here...

Fixed it for you. These things take forever. There are people that I work with that have been waiting 1.5 years for a new ID with the new surname for the woman. But yes, having the full certificate is a good idea. Same thing with birth certificates. Get the full ones and keep em handy, you never know when they might be needed.

Ye the answer that I got finally is that you dont need the unabridged, but it will add weight to your case. Using the abridged is still a marriage certificate, its just not ideal and will add less weight to your case. Provided you have surplus documentation in all areas they wont be too stringent about it.

Then they changed it. a few years ago they would not have accepted my parents application if they didn't have the full certs.

Maybe but you never know when you might need the unabridged version and getting when you're overseas might be an even bigger schlep. For example your kids might require it down the road when they're applying for citizenship.

Ye true, we have our applications in for the other certificates anyway.
