have you changed jobs succesfully without or while completing formal qualification?

so a little background - i have a family member who is currently in a spot of bother - the company he works for is retrenching due to a landscape shift - although he has managed to keep his job and been promised training he doesnt feel safe - because they told everyone their jobs would be safe but still ended up retrenching 80% of the people, so i dont blame him. now he is thinking of moving before the worst happens - or atleast starting to look but he is not sure how to approach it as he is not complete with formal qualification.

he has worked for a fairly decent size company for 3.5 years and has solid experience, has a bunch of certificates and traing done in his area - also did the VZAP thing - thats where he was picked up for his current job.
also almost finished with degree through unisa 3-4 modules left i think but busy with 3rd year for sure, but he says he will only be able to finsh nexyear due to workload.

how do you motivate this person to look for a job because he is afraid his applications wont even be considered, so he thinks it no use.

any advice is appreciated. thanks.

He should market his experiance within the field and subsequent certifications etc over whatever initial education he had. People look to experiance first as much as they moan about qualifications.

I only completed my formal qualification (national diploma) 4 years after my first job as a technician. I was at my 4th employer already. Experience counts but the companies will try to negotiate a lower salary because you don't have the formal qualification needed. They will however claim your full salary (as if you are qualified) from their clients.

i dont think salary is an issue - as surely if he does go to his next job it wont be less than he currently earns. hopefully....

Tell him to start looking NOW. He's just burying his head in the sand. If nobody accepts him for a job, that's just how it is, but nobody will ever accept you if you aren't actively looking for work. Personally I think he will find work.

He must be careful, he will get a better arrangement normally if he gets retrenched. If his current work conditions, job description or position change due to this retrenchment program he may claim that he prefers to be retrenched and get better perks than outright resigning.

The fact that he survived the retrenchment should tell him that he has sufficient skills and is reliable enough that they didn't let him go. This should give him some confidence. Point this out to him.

Also looking for a job while you have one is far easier. It's easier to deal with rejection while you still have a job.
